KEARNEY, Neb. — Kearney Police are looking for the driver of a stolen pickup who allegedly fired shots as the owner followed him in another vehicle.
According to KPD, at around 6 a.m. May 18, officers responded to a report of a black 1996 Chevy pickup stolen from the parking lot of an apartment complex on Villa Drive. The owner reportedly followed the pickup in another vehicle and called police to report it stolen.
The pick-up then went west on Railroad Street from 30th Avenue, leaving the city limits.
A few hundred yards later, KPD said the stolen pickup stopped in the road and the driver fired multiple gun shots from a handgun towards the owner who was still following vehicle while on the phone with 911.
At least one bullet struck the front of the car the owner was driving. The stolen pickup then continued westbound on Railroad street and the owner stopped following it.
The stolen pickup was later located unoccupied on a rural road north of Odessa.
No injuries were reported following the shooting.
Lt. Derek Luke confirmed to NTV News that the shooting is not believed to be related to the series of shootings and a stabbing earlier this week in Kearney.
KPD investigators, along with the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, are working to identify a suspect and collect evidence related to the theft of the pickup and shooting.
The driver of the stolen pickup is identified as a white male with a shaved or bald head. He may have been wearing a long-sleeved white and brown flannel shirt. This remains an active investigation.
