A new courthouse in Grand Island could cost $50 to $75 million as architects unveil plans and a price tag to replace the historic courthouse.

Architects presented a range of options to build a three- or four-story building to the east of the historic courthouse.

The cost would include remodeling at both the historic courthouse and annex to place county offices in both those buildings.

The new courthouse would be build with modern safety and security features. A decade ago the courthouse was called a “ticking time bomb” but the county board did not act.

Since then, caseloads have continued to rise and high profile cases bring in jury pools larger than courtrooms can hold, all while jurors and judges share space with sometimes dangerous offenders.

Commissioners agree it's time to address those needs and build for the future and they're going to bring it to the voters.

Board members are weighing the options, mindful of the cost to taxpayers.

“It’s very complicated,” said Commissioner Pam Lancaster.
