I had lunch at Shop Terrain in CT and with your meal they bring out these terracotta pots filled with bread. They are just so cute. I have taken people from out of town to eat there and the bread is always a big topic of conversation.
I took my mom, sister and niece when they were visiting from Utah. And I set out to make this bread. I want to use it for my thanksgiving dinner and put at every place setting.
I think these would make a great neighbor gift too, if you can find a larger flower pot.
I found these pots at Home Depot for 70 cents each. Simply wash them with soapy water and let dry.
First you need to season the pots. Coat the inside of the pots with olive oil, I just used a napkin.
Then bake the pots upside down on a baking sheet for 2 hours. Take them out of the oven and apply more olive oil then bake upside down again for another two hours.
Fill your pots with your favorite bread recipe.
I always use my mom’s bread recipe from this blog post
Artisan Bread
- 1 1/2 cups water (room temperature)
- 1/4 teaspoon yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 cups bread flour (high rise)
- Mix the flour, salt and yeast first, until combined
- Then add in your water, stir until combined
- Cover with a plate or plastic wrap and let sit for 8 to 24 hours
- Then degas, by stirring it once to get the air out
- Grease the pots with oil or butter.
- Separate into pots the dough into your pots.
- Bake at 400 degrees for about 25 minutes, until golden on top
When I did it I divided it out into four 4″ pots. Next time I am going to double the recipe and fill the pots more.
I think they would be perfect for a dinner party and every place setting have their own potted bread.
Or send as a gift with a tag that says-
“One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever we are doing
and devote our attention to eating.” James Beard
We ate them with chicken noodle soup for dinner tonight and everyone loved the bread.

Grace, I recently started reading your bog and I really enjoy the peak into your sweet family. I also have two girls. I love this bread idea and showed it to my 13 year old who said she would love to try to make it with me.
All the best,

I'm in charge of "Friendsgiving" this year and you, my dear, have just given me the direction for the tablescape! Couple of questions: 1) these are 3 or 4" pots? and 2)Am guessing that these are going to have to be done last minute as leaving them too long in the pot may encourage them to harden? Any pointers you can give will be most appreciated!

I updated my post on the size, they are 4"
I actually made them on Sunday and didn't eat until Tuesday. The bread is hard on the outside so it works perfect to make ahead of time. How fun to do a friend's thanksgiving!

Just wanted to say how much I love your blog. I've been lurking for quite a while. Every time I check in, I go back several weeks to look through your photos again. Your rooms are so lovely, many layers and so comfortable! This recipe will be great for my upcoming (very small) office potluck.

Thanks for the quick response! One more question… is it necessary to place parchment paper or cupcake wrapper in the bottom to avoid seepage?
[email protected] says
No, I didn't think so. I put tin foil on the bottom. It didn't spill out at all.
