Why you Need a French Butter Crock (Butter Nest) instead of a Butter Dish

I shared last week my obsession with a French Butter Dish or French Butter Crock on my social media. All the Nesters are now calling them a Butter Nest! Cutest name ever!!!! They are also called a Butter Keeper or just Butter Crock. I put together the BEST French Butter Crocks on the market in this post! The idea of keeping butter in a crock container that is shaped like a bell dates back to the 16th century. My friend Laila was the first to tell me about a French Butter Crock, and after she told me about it, I had to have one! Not only do they keep your butter looking nice, (insert photo of messy butter dish) they keep your butter soft on the counter and from going rancid. I thought I would put together my favorite French Butter Crocks and how to properly use them!

I use Kerry Gold Butter and just spooned the butter into the rounded bell shape with the handle, then smashed it down. Next you add a little bit of water to the base of the container, yes your butter will touch the water when you first fill it. The water helps to create a seal that keeps oxygen from getting to the butter (oxygen is what makes the butter go rancid). Some French Butter Crocks even have a water fill line. The butter will touch the water, which does nothing to the butter, as the butter runs out it is fine if the water doesn’t touch the butter. Lastly you can add a pinch of salt to help keep it from getting moldy. Change the water every 1-2 weeks. The butter can last a month on your counter (if butter lasts that long in your house!).
