This paper presents the design, fabrication, measurement, and evaluation of two multiple input multiple output antenna elements (MIMOs) optimized for performance in the 5G frequency band. The MIMO antennas are integrated onto Roger/Druoid 5880 substrates with a dielectric constant of 2.2, housed within a compact volume measuring 20×24.14×0.79mm3. Initially, a thorough parametric study is conducted using the CST Electromagnetic (EM) Simulator to analyze and optimize the antenna's performance according to 5G application requirements. Subsequently, in the antenna design phase, calculations are made for the envelope correlation coefficient (ECC > 0.01dB) and diversity gain (DG > 9.9dB), yielding favorable outcomes. Fabrication and measurement …

Publications

Rare event prediction is critical in industrial applications, including real-world Industry 4.0 applications. These events, defined by their low occurrence frequency, are often difficult to predict due to the skewed data distribution, which complicates modeling and evaluation. In our research, we provide a comprehensive review of current approaches to rare event prediction across four key dimensions: rare event data, data processing techniques, algorithmic approaches, and evaluation methodologies [1]. By analyzing diverse datasets with multiple modalities, including numerical, image, text, and audio, we categorize the primary challenges and present the gaps in current research. Specifically, we present three novel research contributions …

This paper investigates an innovative surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor developed on a side-polished multimode optical fiber core. The optical fiber was integrated into specifically designed 3-dimensional printed mold, where manual polishing of the fiber took place. Microsphere Photolithography (MPL) techniques was employed to pattern periodic nanoantenna arrays on the polished surface, incorporating multiple disk diameters at a fixed periodicity. Subsequent gold deposition/lift-off were carried out to transfer the pattern from the photoresist to the fiber core, resulting in highly periodic hexagonal closed pack (HCP) arrays of nano disks. These arrays can significantly enhance the SERS signal intensity compared to …

Practical And Lightweight Defense Against Website Fingerprinting, Colman Mcguan, Chansu Yu, Kyoungwon Suh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Website fingerprinting is a passive network traffic analysis technique that enables an adversary to identify the website visited by a user despite encryption and the use of privacy services such as Tor. Several website fingerprinting defenses built on top of Tor have been proposed to guarantee a user's privacy by concealing trace features that are important to classification. However, some of the best defenses incur a high bandwidth and/or latency overhead. To combat this, new defenses have sought to be both lightweight - i.e., introduce a small amount of bandwidth overhead - and zero-delay to real network traffic. This work …

A Secure Cross-Domain Authentication Scheme Based On Threshold Signature For Mec, Lei Chen, Chong Guo, Bei Gong, Muhammad Waqas, Lihua Deng, Haowen Qin

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The widespread adoption of fifth-generation mobile networks has spurred the rapid advancement of mobile edge computing (MEC). By decentralizing computing and storage resources to the network edge, MEC significantly enhances real-time data access services and enables efficient processing of large-scale dynamic data on resource-limited devices. However, MEC faces considerable security challenges, particularly in cross-domain service environments, where every device poses a potential security threat. To address this issue, this paper proposes a secure cross-domain authentication scheme based on a threshold signature tailored to MEC’s multi-subdomain nature. The proposed scheme employs a (t,n) threshold mechanism to bolster system resilience and security, …

A Benchmark Knowledge Graph Of Driving Scenes For Knowledge Completion Tasks, Ruwan Wickramarachchi, Cory Henson, Amit Sheth

Publications

Knowledge graph completion (KGC) is a problem of significant importance due to the inherent incompleteness in knowledge graphs (KGs). The current approaches for KGC using link prediction (LP) mostly rely on a common set of benchmark datasets that are quite different from real-world industrial KGs. Therefore, the adaptability of current LP methods for real-world KGs and domain-specific ap- plications is questionable. To support the evaluation of current and future LP and KGC methods for industrial KGs, we introduce DSceneKG, a suite of real-world driving scene knowledge graphs that are currently being used across various industrial applications. The DSceneKG is publicly …

Background

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most prevalent childhood psychiatric condition with profound public health, personal, and family consequences. ADHD requires comprehensive treatment; however, lack of communication and integration across multiple points of care is a substantial barrier to progress. Given the chronic and pervasive challenges associated with ADHD, innovative approaches are crucial. We developed the digital health intervention (DHI)—CoolTaCo [Cool Technology Assisting Co-regulation] to address these critical barriers. CoolTaCo uses Patient-Centered Digital Healthcare Technologies (PC-DHT) to promote co-regulation (child/parent), capture patient data, support efficient healthcare delivery, enhance patient engagement, and facilitate shared decision-making, thereby improving access to …

A 3d Memristor Architecture For In-Memory Computing Demonstrated With Sha3, Muayad J. Aljafar, Rasika Joshi, John M. Acken

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Security is a growing problem that needs hardware support. Memristors provide an alternative technology for hardware-supported security implementation. This paper presents a specific technique that utilizes the benefits of hybrid CMOS-memristors technology demonstrated with SHA3 over implementations that use only memristor technology. In the proposed technique, SHA3 is implemented in a set of perpendicular crossbar arrays structured to facilitate logic implementation and circular bit rotation (Rho operation), which is perhaps the most complex operation in SHA3 when carried out in memristor arrays. The Rho operation itself is implemented with CMOS multiplexers (MUXs). The proposed accelerator is standby power-free and circumvents …

Causal Neuro-Symbolic Ai For Root Cause Analysis In Smart Manufacturing, Utkarshani Jaimini, Cory Henson, Amit Sheth

Publications

Root cause analysis is the process of investigating the cause of a failure and providing measures to prevent future failures. It is an active area of research due to the complexities in manufacturing production lines and the vast amount of data that requires manual inspection. We present a combined approach of causal neuro-symbolic AI for root cause analysis to identify failures in smart manufacturing production lines. We have used data from an industry-grade rocket assembly line and a simulation package to demonstrate the effectiveness and relevance of our approach.

Ontology Design Metapattern For Relationtype Role Composition, Utkarshani Jaimini, Ruwan Wickramarachchi, Cory Henson, Amit Sheth 2024 University of South Carolina

Ontology Design Metapattern For Relationtype Role Composition, Utkarshani Jaimini, Ruwan Wickramarachchi, Cory Henson, Amit Sheth

Publications

RelationType is a metapattern that specifies a property in a knowledge graph that directly links the head of a triple with the type of the tail. This metapattern is useful for knowledge graph link prediction tasks, specifically when one wants to predict the type of a linked entity rather than the entity instance itself. The RelationType metapattern serves as a template for future extensions of an ontology with more fine-grained domain information.

Causal Knowledge Graph For Scene Understanding In Autonomous Driving, Utkarshani Jaimini, Cory Henson, Amit Sheth 2024 University of South Carolina

Causal Knowledge Graph For Scene Understanding In Autonomous Driving, Utkarshani Jaimini, Cory Henson, Amit Sheth

Publications

The current approaches to autonomous driving focus on learning from observation or simulated data. These approaches are based on correlations rather than causation. For safety-critical applications, like autonomous driving, it’s important to represent causal dependencies among variables in addition to the domain knowledge expressed in a knowledge graph. This will allow for a better understanding of causation during scenarios that have not been observed, such as malfunctions or accidents. The causal knowledge graph, coupled with domain knowledge, demonstrates how autonomous driving scenes can be represented, learned, and explained using counterfactual and intervention reasoning to infer and understand the behavior of …

Visual Causal Question And Answering With Knowledge Graph Link Prediction, Utkarshani Jaimini, Cory Henson, Amit Sheth

Publications

The ability to answer causal questions is important for any system that requires robust scene under- standing. In this demonstration, we develop a prototype system that leverages our causal link prediction framework, CausalLP. CausalLP framework uses a visual causal knowledge graph and associated knowledge graph embedding for two visual causal question and answering tasks- (i) causal explanation and (ii) causal prediction. In the live demonstration sessions, the participants will be invited to test the efficiency and effectiveness of the system for visual causal question and answering.

What lies underneath the ocean floor is of interest to a wide variety of disciplines. The focus here is imaging the upper tens of meters of material beneath the seafloor. The sub-bottom profiler is a valuable tool to that end, producing a 2-D image in depth below the seafloor and along the track of the ship. Geoscientists and engineers are frequently interested in not only the subseabed beneath the ship but also either side or cross-track of the ship. We show an approach to cross-track imaging using a low-frequency multibeam sub-bottom profiler. The main result is the detection of a …

A Concept Of Controlling Grover Diffusion Operator: A New Approach To Solve Arbitrary Boolean-Based Problems, Ali Al-Bayaty, M. Perkowski 2024 Portland State University

A Concept Of Controlling Grover Diffusion Operator: A New Approach To Solve Arbitrary Boolean-Based Problems, Ali Al-Bayaty, M. Perkowski

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A controlled-diffusion operator for Boolean oracles is designed as a new approach for Grover’s algorithm to search for solutions for arbitrary logical structures of such oracles, since the Grover diffusion operator is not able to find correct solutions for some logical structures of Boolean oracles. We also show that the Phase oracles do not work sometimes correctly using the Grover diffusion operator. Our proposed controlled-diffusion operator relies on the states of output qubit, as the reflection of Boolean decisions from a Boolean oracle without relying on the phase kickback. We prove that on many examples of Boolean and Phase oracles …

Long-Distance Photon-Mediated And Short-Distance Entangling Gates In Three-Qubit Quantum Dot Spin Systems, Nooshin M. Estakhri, Ada Warren, Sophia E. Economou, Edwin Barnes

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Superconducting resonator couplers will likely become an essential component in modular semiconductor quantum dot (QD) spin qubit processors, as they help alleviate crosstalk and wiring issues as the number of qubits increases. Here, we focus on a three-qubit system composed of two modules: a two-electron triple QD resonator coupled to a single-electron double QD. Using a combination of analytical techniques and numerical results, we derive an effective Hamiltonian that describes the three-qubit logical subspace and show that it accurately captures the dynamics of the system. We examine the performance of short-range and long-range entangling gates, revealing the effect of a …
