Dear Greensboro Community,
Today, I want to inform you about an important new ordinance aimed at improving the safety and well-being of our youth and our community. After careful consideration, the City Council has enacted a curfew for minors under the age of 18.
🔒 **Curfew Hours:**
- Sunday to Thursday: 11:00 PM - 6:00 AM
- Friday and Saturday: 12:00 AM - 6:00 AM
This decision comes in response to a rise in juvenile crime and violence, with the goal of fostering a safer environment for our children. It’s essential that we all take responsibility for the well-being of our youth, and this curfew is a step toward ensuring their safety and encouraging parental guidance.
Exceptions to the curfew include:
-Engaging in emergency errands
-Returning directly home from school activities
-Traveling to or from lawful employment
-Attending activities involving First Amendment rights (like protests or religious gatherings)
-On their own property with permission
Parents and guardians, we need your cooperation. It is crucial that we work together to supervise our minors and guide them in making safe choices. If a minor violates this ordinance, the following penalties apply:
First Violation: A warning will be issued to both the minor and the parent/guardian.
Subsequent Violations: Minors may face juvenile court complaints and remanded through Juvenile Court with fines up to $1,000 or imprisonment for for not more than six months or both for those aged 17.
Penalties for Parents: Parents who fail to supervise their minors may also face penalties, including fines for repeat violations.
First Violation: A warning will be issued.
Subsequent Violations: Punishment by a fine not to exceed $1,000 or imprisonment for not more than six months or both.
Let’s join hands to create a safer Greensboro for everyone. Thank you for your support and understanding as we implement this ordinance.
Stay safe,
Tommy Nelson Sr.
