ABOUT THIS SUPERSTITION-INSPIRED DRUM LOOP @ 98 BPM

I’m a big fan of Stanley Randolph… His groove is so freaking strong, and his pocket is just *chef’s kiss*! I remember the first time I watched one of his videos, I was blown away! Moreover, I’ve been transcribing his performance of Superstition (below) note for note, which I will post soon enough. In the process of doing so, I’ve gotten to dig into his flavour, and so recorded this the other day. Likewise, if you’re interested in the raw, unmixed stems, just drop me an email and I’ll sort you out. I hope you enjoy it!

ABOUT THIS DEAD DRUM LOOP

I love a good, dry production; a dead drum sound can really add tons of vibe a track. Indeed, lots of great tunes from the 70s featured this type of thing. Consequently, for this loop, I felt like a longer note on the snare could help carry this beat a bit more.

Whilst it may not sound exactly like it, the beat was inspired the Stone Temple Pilots’ vibes on their albums no.4 and Tiny Music. Both of these albums are fantastic and really worth a listen!

I’ve given the loop a quick mix with a some compression on the snare for that smack and ring to be nice and prominent. Of course, feel free to mess around with it as you please! The idea is for you to have fun with it, whether you go for a Latin feel or something totally different.

ABOUT THIS ODD TIME DRUM LOOP IN 7/8 @ 193 BPM

Some of my favourite beats are odd time drum grooves. For instance, tunes like Soundgarden’s Spoonman, Alice In Chain’s Them Bones, Rush’s YYZ has great odd time bits, etc. A few weeks ago, whilst practicing my Paradiddles, I came up with this odd time drum loop in 7/8. I thought it sounded really cool, so I recorded it and decided to offer it as a free downloadable loop.

I’ve mixed it with just enough compression for it to found big and fat, but not enough to saturate it. Of course, feel free to mess around with it as you please! The idea is for you to have fun with it, whether you go for a Latin feel or something totally different.

ABOUT THIS SAMBA DRUM BEAT LOOP @ 100 BPM

A few weeks ago, whilst doing some creative practice using Stick Control and my own book Concepts, I got inspired and came up with this Samba drum beat loop @ 100 BPM. It’s got a cool Latin feel to it which I really like, and hope you do too. I wanted to get a soft, gong-like sound from little China cymbal as well as a more pitch-oriented sound of the toms because I liked the tuning. So in order to achieve this I opted for a mallet to create these textures.

I’ve mixed it so it’s got a nice and fat feel to it, using the Waves API 2500 plugin to help bring it all together. You could, of course mess around with it as you please! The idea is for you to have fun with it, whether you go for a Latin feel or something totally different.

TRIP HOP GROOVE LIKE MASSIVE ATTACK TEARDROP @ 80 BPM

This came groove came out whilst I was tracking a new song for Russell Swallow; he’s a brilliant artist with a lot of musical scope and a killer voice. His brief for the track included Massive Attack Teardrop as one of the references, so I spent some time listening to the album it’s on. So, I messed around a little bit between takes, thinking about how Teardrop sounds very delicate. So, delicate was the operative mission when playing the groove.

I’ve mixed it so it’s got a lot of reverb, using the amazing Valhalla Room plugin, and given it a bit of heat with Soundtoys’ excellent Radiator plugin so it sounds a bit more robust whilst still retaining that nice delicate feel to it. You could, of course, add more compression or EQ what I’ve done as you please, or just use it as is… The idea is for you to have fun with it, whether you go for something like the classic Massive Attack Teardrop vibe or something else.

KICK SNARE HATS @ 87 BPM

I love coming up with a creative drum beat and this one, whilst not the most out-there of grooves, is definitely one of ‘em.

This came out whilst messing around between takes during a remote recording session for a brilliant Chicago-based artist. One of the things that sparked my imagination was that I had taken the toms off the kit. This helped me focus on the central bass drum, snare and hi hats and play with dynamics in order to create texture.

Sometimes it really is a matter of less is more when coming up with a creative drum beat. For instance, one of the tracks I recorded for Tyler, the aforementioned artist, was just bass drum and snare. If I recall correctly, I then proceeded to overdub different rhythmic layers to build on the groove from a slightly different approach.

In fairness, I should’ve filmed myself recording some of those tracks, but I was so engrossed by the music that, whilst I did think to do so, I just brushed it off. Oh well, at least I captured this creative drum beat here.
