Flash Back Arrestor Oxygen
This Flash Back Arrestor Oxygen is a Non-resettable device which connects to the regulator as a safety function to protect cylinders, regulators and distribution lines.
Used in oxy/fuel gas cutting & welding, a flashback arrestor will withstand a series of minor flashbacks but will not react as a consequence of external heat.
It is a legal requirement to use a flash back arrestor when using all oxy/fuel cutting and welding sets. A flashback arrestor must be used on each gas supply – both oxygen and fuel gas. A very inexpensive way to work safely and legally.
If a flashback occurs, it is important to investigate immediately to prevent any future issues.
The main cause for many flashbacks are due to incorrect initial lighting up procedures and a failure to purge the gases correctly.
Another common cause of flash backs is lighting up with too low a fuel gas flow combined with a leaking oxygen valve. Always check your equipment for leaks.
The displayed picture shows the oxygen and the fuel gas flashback arrestors.

Stay Safe with Flash back Arrestors
What Is a Flashback?
In oxy-fuel welding, cutting, or heating operations, safety is paramount. A flashback occurs when the flame moves back from the welding nozzle into the torch and potentially into the gas supply hoses. This dangerous event can lead to severe equipment damage, explosions, and even fatal injuries.
Common Causes of Flashbacks:
- Improper System Purging: Failing to purge the system before lighting the torch accounts for about 90% of flashbacks.
- Incorrect Pressures: Using pressures that are too low or exceeding the nozzle’s capacity can cause higher-pressure gas to flow into a lower-pressure gas line.
- Incorrect Lighting Procedures: Lighting the torch with both control valves open, often due to shortcutting safety procedures to save time.
- Pressure Drops: Kinks in supply hoses or leaks in regulators, hoses, or connections can cause a drop in fuel gas or oxygen pressure.
- Reverse Gas Flow: Improper shutdown procedures or malfunctioning valves and regulators can lead to the reverse flow of gases during temporary storage or shutdown.
The Solution: Flashback Arrestors from Welder’s Choice
To prevent the potentially disastrous consequences of a flashback, it’s essential to have flashback arrestors fitted to both gas hoses. Norsemen/Welder’s Choice offers a range of high-quality flashback arrestors designed to keep you safe on the job.
Types of Flashback Arrestors We Offer:
- Resettable Flashback Arrestors:
- Automatically shut off the gas supply following a flashback.
- Feature a pressure-sensitive cut-off device with a visible indicator lever.
- Ideal for welding at a distance from gas cylinders or in challenging industrial environments.
- Standard In-Line Flashback Arrestors:
- Compact units including a non-return valve, flame-arresting sintered element, inlet filter, and a pressure-sensitive thermal cut-off device.
- Equipped with a drop-down shroud indicating activation of the cut-off component.
- Premier In-Line Resettable Flashback Arrestors:
- Sleek design in chrome and brass.
- Feature a drop-down shroud to alert when the pressure-sensitive cut-off device has been activated.
Key Components of Our Flashback Arrestor Oxygen:
- Gas Non-Return (Check) Valve: Prevents the reverse flow of gases.
- Flame Arrestor: Stops flames from traveling back into the gas supply.
- Temperature-Sensitive Cut-Off Valve: Activates in response to excessive heat.
- Pressure-Sensitive Cut-Off Device: Isolates the gas supply in case of a flashback.
How Do Flash back Arrestors Work?
Our flashback arrestors provide multiple layers of protection:
- Non-Return Valve Activation: Instantly stops reverse gas flow, preventing an explosive gas mixture.
- Flame Arrestor Activation: Extinguishes incoming flames in fractions of a second by breaking up and cooling the flame.
- Temperature-Triggered Cut-Off Valve: In certain models, a component melts under excessive heat, deploying a spring that automatically interrupts the gas supply.
Installation Guide of the Flash Back Arrestor Oxygen
Installing a flashback arrestor is straightforward:
- Select the Correct Unit: Ensure the arrestor is suitable for your gas type.
- Clean Before Installation: Wipe the unit to remove any debris.
- Inspect Components: Check fittings, threads, and gas seating faces for damage.
- Proper Tightening: Use the correct spanner to tighten fittings without over-tightening.
- Optimal Positioning: Install at the connection point between the pressure regulator and gas hose, leaving room for easy access.
- Resettable Models: Ensure the reset button or lever is in the closed position before use.
- Leak Check: After assembly, set the regulator pressure and check all fittings with an approved leak-detection fluid.
