In 31 years of coaching at Petosky High School, Ray consistently produced winning seasons with a record of 685-142-8. In fact, his 685 career wins rank 4th in Michigan and 9th nationally. He was named the Michigan Class B Coach of the Year in 1993 and again in 2007. In 2007, he was a National Wrestling Coach of the Year Semi-finalist. Ray used his skills not only to build school and community support for his wrestling program at Petosky, but to better wrestling throughout the state including coaching Team Michigan at various national events, working at clinics and camps. He served on the MHSAA Coaches Board for six years.
