The Player, also known as the Adventurer, is the avatar of someone playing Old School RuneScape. The Player is a human, may be either body type and may be freely customised. Their adventuring career begins in the year 169 of the Fifth Age on Tutorial Island, and thereafter involves a number of quests until they become a well-known hero.
History[edit | edit source]
Early history[edit | edit source]
As stated in the book My life, the Adventurer was born in the Fifth Age to simple beginnings, with very little money to their name and nothing but a dream of adventure. According to Sir Renitee, the chief herald of Falador, the Player's family hails from either Misthalin, Kandarin, or Asgarnia; their family has no known noble blood, and thus no inherited heraldry, though they are permitted by Sir Renitee to use the crest of their family's place of origin as their own. The Adventurer's family is rarely mentioned, though a few references have been made to a brother,[1] a grandmother,[2] and an aunt.[3]
Adventures[edit | edit source]
I've never really been one for looking backwards. I prefer to look ahead.
— The Player[4]
In the year 169 of the Fifth Age, the Adventurer made their way to Tutorial Island, where they first learned the basics of combat, skills, questing and systems such as the bank.
The Adventurer then left the island and began training their skills and performing a number of quests for people. Starting out with simple tasks such as shearing sheep and helping the cook of Lumbridge Castle prepare a cake, they eventually went on to perform more impressive feats, like slaying the demon Delrith and assisting in rediscovering the incantation to the Rune Essence Mine. As their adventures continued, their achievements amassed and became ever more gallant, including slaying the dragon Elvarg, becoming a Temple Knight and stopping major threats, brokering peace between multiple Fremennik tribes and earning the honorific title 'Dräpare', aiding the Myreque in liberating Morytania from the rule of the vampyres, leading an uprising in Ardougne and restoring the city of Prifddinas, thwarting gnomish plans to invade human territories, preventing the dragonkin from destroying humanity, and much more.
The Player became a member of the Champions', Heroes', Legends' and Myths' Guild. Additionally, after resolving a dispute between two warring islands, they succeeded King Vargas who appointed them as regent of the island of Miscellania, becoming engaged to, or the best friend of, either Prince Brand or Princess Astrid in the process.
They have had a number of mentors in their adventuring career, most notably the Wise Old Man.
Throughout their travels, the Adventurer encountered a race known as the Mahjarrat: long-lived beings who ritually sacrifice one of their own kind every 500 years in order to rejuvenate the rest. Continuing to meddle in Mahjarrat affairs, they engaged in conflicts with the Zamorakian Enakhra, General Khazard, (possibly) Hazeel, and Lucien, but assisted a handful of Mahjarrat loyal to the mysterious god Zaros, including Akthanakos and Azzanadra.
The Player has also encountered many gods and godlike beings, from Amascut and Icthlarin to the Fragment of Seren, powerful spirits such as the three water spirits of Elidinis and Fossegrimen, the guardian Juna, surviving army members of the God Wars and god-aligned followers, plus innumerable other ancient creatures and fearsome monsters. It would appear that the Player is canonically a follower of Guthix based on some in-game dialogue.[5][6]
Overall, the Player's actions vary in their scope and gravity, ranging from helping a misguided troll learn to farm or retrieving a boy's ball to saving the world several times over, but the Player is generally altruistic and determined in accomplishing their goals.
