I WANT YOU FOR THE NAVY, Original Howard Chandler Christy WW1 Navy Recruitment Poster

I WANT YOU FOR THE NAVY, 1917. Original Rolled and Linen Backed WW1 propaganda poster (26 x 41”) (85 x 135 cms).  Designed by Howard Chandler Christy (1872 – 1952) for the Naval recruitment program during World War 1 this poster is among the most collectible of his extensive portfolio of WW1 posters. Depicting his wife who quickly became identifiable as the “Christy Girl” this time with “attitude” the poster also reinforced the suffrage movement which was ratified to law just 2 years after the war. As such this poster together with Christy’s other poster “Gee I wish I were a Man” is an important depiction of the woman’s suffrage movement as well as a key poster for the history of navy recruitment. “Promotion for any one enlisting apply any recruiting station of postmaster”

This rolled poster was in good original C8 condition prior to linen backing and restoration. While the image was originally entirely fine the left margin was significantly damaged and repaired with vintage WW1 paper during linen backing. We linen back and frame all of our posters IN HOUSE at our studio in Katy, TX!
