Visit Lavenham England, Day Trip from London

I love searching for quirky places to visit while traveling. I did a search for unique, off-the-beaten-path spots to visit while planning a trip to England and discovered Lavenham. Lavenham England has a population of under 2,000. It is a small village of half-timbered crooked houses approximately 2 hours from London. The village is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in England. This is a great day trip opportunity to the English countryside and a wonderful addition to your list of the prettiest English villages to visit.

A Quirky Village of Crooked Houses

Lavenham’s history is interesting. The town grew fast in the 1500s due to its production of wool and popular blue broadcloth fabric and quickly became the fourth richest town in England. The town had so much money that several of the families were fined by Henry VII for displaying too much wealth. The homes were built quickly using greenwood. As the wood dried the homes began to lean. Dutch refugees began to produce less expensive cloth and took over the fabric industry. Lavenham quickly went broke and families were not able to rebuild the leaning homes.

Things to Do in Lavenham England

There are 320 buildings of historical significance in Lavenham England. Wander the winding streets of leaning half-timbered homes and take lots of photos. Harry Potter fans will recognize the area as Godric’s Hollow. Stop by the DeVere House where Harry was born and his parents were killed by Voldemort. Don’t miss Little Hall Museum, a 14th-century weaver home and the oldest house in the town (1390). Check out what life was like in Lavenham throughout the years at the Guildhall of Corpus Christi and see the WWII memorabilia at the Airman’s Bar in the Swan Hotel.

Shop along High Street and the Market Square. Enjoy tea in a crooked house at Munnings Tea Room or stop in the Cock Horse for a pint. I had one of the best lunches I have ever eaten in England at Ashby’s. Ashby’s is a small restaurant (six tables) above a candy and ice cream store. If you find it, get the bangers and mash, OMG, those potatoes!!!
