Ashanti Says Ja Rule Is 'Working on Music' and They're 'On the Path' to Dropping a Joint Album

Ashanti is opening up about an upcoming joint album with good friend Ja Rule.

The 38-year-old actress and singer spoke to PEOPLE about their upcoming collaboration while promoting her new musical film, Stuck.

“I believe he is working on music,” she tells PEOPLE exclusively of Ja Rule. “We were touring for the past three years. I just saw him two days ago, we had a show together in Indio [California].”

She continued, “We have some shows together. He’s definitely gonna be working on stuff and we’re gonna be doing some stuff together as well.”

“We’re still on the path to dropping a joint album,” Ashanti added. “I think that should be kind of cool, too.”

Ashanti previously spoke to PEOPLE in February about Ja Rule’s involvement in the disastrous Fyre Festival, which the rapper co-founded with entrepreneur Billy McFarland.

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” Ashanti said. “I think that it’s so important when you fall down to get right back up. You have to try. People make mistakes, you know what I mean, and you have to be man enough to admit when you make a mistake and keep pushing.”

She added the two were like “a real brother and sister” as they embarked on a joint tour.

“I kick it in his dressing room, he comes and takes stuff out of my dressing room,” she said, adding Ja Rule steals her “candy, chips, juice, everything.”

While she has also been busy working on a new album, Ashanti has been promoting Stuck, in which she stars alongside an all-star cast that includes Giancarlo Esposito, Arden Cho and Amy Madigan.

“Everyone got along, everyone brought their own little spirit to the table, there were no egos,” Ashanti tells PEOPLE. “Everyone took the project really serious and everyone knew their lines, and was on time. The wanted to make it perfect.”
