Someone gave me a bag of live crabs (the ocean kind, not the other).  They are small but feisty.

What shall I cook for dinner tonight?

Seeking recipe ideas.

Do you have a great crab cake recipe?  There was an Irish restaurant near me that had amazing crab cakes.  If I had their recipe I'd send it over....sorry!

Nothing. When they are fresh, you don't need anything else. Well, maybe some butter.

Ok, definitely butter.

What kind of crabs? Blue crabs make excellent gumbo & stuffed crab. King crabs are tasty swimming in butter. Dungeness crab, hmmm, don't know what it's called but it's chunks of crab in a thick cream sauce over pasta. Then there is cangrejo del mar diablo. Probably hard to find those spices in Canada.

I'll never forget the time I was excitedly telling my coworker that my husband had crabs. We worked in a Christian preschool and she was in her 60s and me in my 20s, and we were surrounded by three-year olds at that moment, and she just gave me this look and started laughing. I said something like, "What did I say? My husband went to the beach and picked up some tiny little crabs and has them in an aquarium down in our basement." She just kept laughing. I asked her what else "crabs" meant. She told me I should ask my husband. And that's how I found out that crabs aren't just creatures that live on the beach.
