Feature summary (what you would like to be able to do and where):
- As a user, I'd like to be able to prevent "pings" (echo mentions) from alerting me when they are generated on certain pages, so that I can cut down on unnecessary (and/or stressful) notifications and focus on the tasks I want to complete "on-wiki".
Use case(s) (list the steps that you performed to discover that problem, and describe the actual underlying problem which you want to solve. Do not describe only a solution):
- On high-interaction pages, the number of direct user mentions can often cause a significant number of notifications to be generated.
- Sometimes multiple users are generating mentions on a given page, making per-user "muting" ineffective.
Benefits (why should this be implemented?):
- Being able to "mute" mentions for a given page can reduce stressful interactions where a user is trying to disengage from a situation.
- A reduction in unnecessary notifications generated from a given page helps cut down on distracting alerts.
Considerations
- Mentions were designed to get the attention of a user, and other editors may assume a user is "ignoring everyone" if a key administrative discussion (e.g. the English Wikipedia's "Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents" page) is on their muted list of pages — users are free to turn off mention notifications entirely (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Notifications#Opt-in_and_opt-out), and as such should not be relied on for getting a user's attention.
