A systematic discussion of the theoretical concepts employed in the description of nuclear constitution, and summarizes the relative empirical evidence concerning these concepts.
Ben Roy Mottelson is a American-Danish physicist, scientist, and author. He is known for his work on geometry of atomic nuclei.
Background
Ben Roy Mottelson was born on July 9, 1926 in Chicago, Cook Country, Illinois, United States. He is the son of Goodman Mottelson and Georgia (Blum) Mottelson. He was the second of his parents' three children. Ben spent his early years in La Grange, a suburb located just outside the city of Chicago.
Education
Ben Roy Mottelson graduated from Lyons Township High School. In 1947 he received a Bachelor of Science degree from the Purdue University. In 1950 Mottelson obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Nuclear Physics from the Harvard University.
Soon after receiving his Doctor of Philosophy in 1950, Ben Roy Mottelson received one-year Sheldon Traveling Fellowship from the Harvard University. He traveled to Denmark and joined the Institute for Theoretical Physics (later the Niels Bohr Institute) in Copenhagen. Initially, he planned to spend only the 1950-1951 session at Copenhagen. At that time, the Institute was run by eminent physicist and Nobel laureate Niels Bohr.
A fellowship from the United States Atomic Energy Commission permitted Mottelson to continue his work in Copenhagen for two more years after which he held a research position in the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) theoretical study group that was formed in Copenhagen. With the founding of the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Atomic Physics in Copenhagen (1957), he received a position as professor which he has held since. The spring term of 1959 was spent as visiting professor in the University of California at Berkeley.
In 1971 he became a naturalized Danish citizen and also holds an American citizenship. Mottelson has continued his association with Nordita and, in 1981, was named director of the institute. He lives in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Ben Roy Mottelson is an honorary member of the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters and the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. He is a foreign fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences.
