Rawlins, the elderly housekeeper, takes an extraordinary interest in her employer's daughter. Granger suffers financial losses and obtains a substantial loan from McCall, who is a mine owner. Granger is unable to meet the note when it falls due, but McCall, attracted by Ethel, consents to cancel it upon condition that her father consent to their marriage. Ethel accidentally overhears the conversation which follows and thus learns that she is not Granger's daughter, that she had been left on his doorstep when an infant and that the widower had adopted her. Rawlins, hiding behind the portieres at the opposite end of the room, also overhears the foregoing. The woman recognizes McCall. Obtaining a revolver, the woman suddenly turns out the lights from her place of hiding and orders the people in the room to remain seated under penalty of death. Rawlins then declares that McCall is her husband and Ethel their daughter. She had married the man, only to be separated from him when he was arrested for counterfeiting. Ethel was born shortly afterward. Unable to obtain work because of the infant, Rawlins, or Mrs. McCall, had placed her upon Granger's doorstep. When the lights are presently turned on, McCall is found to have disappeared through the window. Harvey sees the man mistaking him for a burglar, he seizes him and the man is placed under arrest.
