The Public Domain Review was founded in 2011 by Adam Green and Jonathan Gray (who continues to offer the wisest counsel). It is registered in the UK as a Community Interest Company (#11386184), denoting a company existing primarily to benefit a community or with a view to pursuing a social purpose, with all profits having to be used for this purpose.

A huge thanks to past members of the team: Melissa McCarthy, Alex Andriesse, Sam Dolbear, and Ned Pennant-Rea. And also to past volunteers: Jacob Halabe, Lauren Washuk, Heather Jacobson, Danaé Panchaud, Zsa Zsa Shea, Anna Krentz, Jake DeBacher, Imogen Clarke, Margot Blankier, and Laura Tradii. And also to Lotta Heikkinen who was an intern (courtesy of the Finnish Institute) from March to August 2015.

Although now independent, for the first five years of its existence The Public Domain Review was a project of the Open Knowledge Foundation — an organisation dedicated to promoting open data and open content in all their forms – and we worked closely alongside Open GLAM, a fellow OKF initiative, that promotes free and open access to digital cultural heritage held by Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums. We are eternally grateful to the OKF for all the help they gave us in our early years, particularly in helping us secure seed-funding from the Shuttleworth Foundation which kept the project going for its first two years.
