Quite often, it comes naturally to women to find simple solutions to major problems. This has been proved once again by members of the all-women Rotary Club of Dindigul Queencity, RID 3000, Tamil Nadu. In a remarkable act of community service, these women Rotarians have placed three open cupboards filled with clothes for women and children at the Dindigul Government Hospital (two) and the Rotary Hall in the city. These cupboards offer free, round-the-clock access to used clothing for those in need. “Ours is an all-women’s club and we felt that if we allow the choice to the women to select the clothes they want, and without their being supervised, it would give them a lot more dignity, than somebody handing out the clothes to them,” says club member Aarthy Mukesh, who edits the club’s bulletin.

In 2023, Bharat Daga, then president of the Rotary Club of Raipur, RID 3261, turned his vision into reality by setting up a computer centre at the Amilidih Government School in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. “Most students here come from impoverished backgrounds; their parents are daily wagers, street vendors or domestic workers. Despite having 2,000 students, the school lacked a computer lab or digital classroom. Our club was determined to change that, and empower these children with skills needed for a brighter future,” he says.

RC Kanpur, RID 3110, runs the Neki Ki Diwar (Wall of Kindness) at Rotary ­Shahid Park, Phoolbagh. During winter, this facility offers warm clothes, blankets, and other essentials to those in need. With active support from club members and the Rotaract Club of Kanpur Star, over 1,000 items have already been ­distributed this season.
