Air Tahiti Nui was formed as an incentive of French Polynesia government to increase quality and traffic of its tourism industry. Government of French Polynesia is majority stakeholder and airline commenced operations in 1998. Air Tahiti Nui provides scheduled international service to Tahiti. All its flights are long-haul. Airline serves Tokyo, Osaka, Auckland, Los Angeles, Paris and Sydney and employs over 700 people.
