National airline of Kingdom of Tonga was established by the government and started operations in 1974 as Friendly Islands Airways. Airline traditionally operated domestic service and regional flights to neighboring islands. Airline also code-share with Air New Zealand and Air Nauru to feed its domestic network. In 1999 airline begun international service to Australia and New Zealand and in 2003 flights to Honolulu were inaugurated. Airline was loosing money on these operations and had to shut down in April 2004.
