Backscattering from natural rough multilayers is addressed. In order to characterize the radar response patterns of natural rough multilayer, the closed-form solution of the Boundary Perturbation Theory (BPT), specialized to backscattering configuration, is employed in conjunction with a fractal description of the interfacial roughness, involving the fractional Brownian motion (fBm) process. Furthermore, numerical examples are presented and discussed with reference to layered structure of interest for remote sensing scenarios. As a result, BPT-fBm model offers a consistent and plausible explanation of the scattering dependency on the involved parameters, so providing a rationale for understanding the basic scattering properties of natural rough multilayers.
