The dielectric properties of Australian vertisol, a clay soil in which bulk density changes
substantially with water content, are investigated by microwave transmission measurements.
It is shown that the soil permittivity model of Hallikainen at al.(1985) is not directly applicable
to this soil; alternative regression formulae are presented.
