Wireless networks make us expect the realization of new applications using distributed multimedia, such as in advanced traffic systems, disaster prevention systems, and ad hoc networks. However, since the network bandwidth over a wireless network is not stable and is limited because of inherently higher packet loss rates compared with wired networks, QOS guaranteed functions have to be introduced more carefully when a video streaming service is provided. We introduce an optimal control method to determine how to transmit compressed video packets from server to client so that the required network bandwidth is minimized and network input/output buffers are optimized. A client server model for video streaming is proposed and numerical equations are formulated. The optimal data sending rate from the server is derived and the temporal buffer occupancy is calculated. A computational result using actual video data indicates the effectiveness of the suggested video data transmission.
