Things (IoT). In fact, the term “Internet of Things” embraces all kinds of gadgets and devices that can communicate with one another via a connected network. The Internet of “Smart Things” embodies ambient intelligence in gadgets and devices to make things brainy and clever, such as smart phones, smart appliances, smart vehicles, smart buildings and smart cities. Services computing can be seen as a utility-based infrastructure in which computing and communication are delivered as services. The marriage of Internet of Things and Services computing will enrich our work environment and our life style by turning the dream of smart houses, smart offices, smart cities, and smart planet into reality. However, this marriage will only be made feasible in the heaven of big data through real-time analytics and big data technology. In the past decade, we have witnessed the success of delivering numerous hardware infrastructures, computing platforms and software applications as outsourced and managed services. In the next decade, we anticipate that big data analytics are being packaged and outsourced as large-scale “dialtone” services. IEEE Transactions on Services Computing (TSC) encourages authors and readers to explore the research opportunities and challenges from multiple dimensions towards making the marriage of Internet of Things and Services Computing in the heaven of Big Data.
This TSC issue presents our readers with four sections. The first section is the survey column featuring one paper by Prof. Dr. Zhaohui Wu and his co-authors. It presents a comprehensive overview of the development of modern services industry in China. The second section is the regular paper section, consisting of five papers, covering cloud services, mobile services, process discovery, and services composition. The third section features the special topic on Software Engineering and Applications for Cloud-based Mobile Systems, edited by the guest editors, Dr. Doris Carver, Dr. WK Chan, Dr. Carl K. Chang, and Dr. Hongji Yang. This special topic section consists of three papers and the guest editors’ introduction describes the special topic area and the list of accepted papers. The fourth section features the special topic section on Mobile Big Data Management and Innovative Applications, edited by the guest editors, Dr. Kai Hwang, Dr. Min Chen, Dr. Jie Wu. It consists of four papers and the guest editors’ introduction describes the special topic area and summarizes the list of accepted papers. Articles included in each of these two special topic sections are selected from a pool of submissions and reviewed by three independent reviewers. The final decision process is highly competitive and the guest editors of each of these two special topic sections made the final selection based on the technical merits and originality, the relevance to the special topic section themes and to the TSC scope, and the consistency of the reviews. For each of the two special topic sections, the corresponding guest editors provide an introduction to the papers selected. On behalf of the TSC editorial board, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our guest editors, who have made significant efforts and contributions in organizing and delivering these two special topic sections. In addition, I would like to introduce the associate editors who joined the TSC editorial board since Jan 2016. They are Keqin Li, Barbara Pernici, Balaji Palanisamy, Lakshmish Ramaswamy, Padmal Vitharana, Weisong Shi, and Jianwei Yin. Their photos and bios are provided at the end of this EIC message. Finally, I would like to thank our current editorial board members and our past editorial board members and …
