We formalize sampling a function using kd darts. A kd Dart is a set of independent, mutually
orthogonal, k-dimensional hyperplanes called kd flats. A dart has d choose k flats, aligned
with the coordinate axes for efficiency. We show kd darts are useful for exploring a function's
properties, such as estimating its integral, or finding an exemplar above a threshold. We
describe a recipe for converting some algorithms from point sampling to kd dart sampling, if
the function can be evaluated along ak-d flat. We demonstrate that kd darts are more …

[PDF][PDF] kd darts: Sampling by k-Dimensional Flat Searches.

SA Mitchell - 2012 - osti.gov
… In this paper we formalize the notion of a kd dart, which is a point 2 sample extended to
searches along k-dimensional directions. We 3 propose to use kd darts to sample a function’s
properties in high 4 dimensions, such as its integral or an exemplar above a threshold. …
We demonstrate 8 that kd darts are better than point-wise samples in high dimensions 9
depending on the characteristics of the sampling domain, eg if the 10 subregion of interest
is long and thin and the search is not too ex11 pensive. …
