What’s On at Palace Theatre
The renovated Palace Theatre throws open its doors for a brand new era, with the acclaimed Tammy Faye musical currently playing as its first big show. Based on the life of famous televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, this “divinely delirious glitz-bomb of a musical” (Financial Times of London) opened at London’s Almeida Theatre to five-star reviews and standing ovations, and promises to be even bigger in New York City. Music by Elton John and Jake Shears makes this a buoyant and uplifting story that celebrates Bakker’s journey from travelling preacher’s wife to nation’s sweetheart - and gay icon! It follows in the footsteps of SIX and & Juliet, which also debuted in London, but brings its own fresh style to shake up Broadway.
About the Palace Theatre
The Palace Theatre first opened its doors in 1913 and was home to a variety of performers before becoming a movie palace. In 1965 the Nederlander Organization purchased the theater and reopened it as a Broadway venue the following year. The Palace went on to host the 25th Tony Awards in 1971 and was home to a variety of short-running Broadway productions before undergoing renovations in the mid-80s.
The theater was designed by Kirchhoff & Rose and initially had an office wing attached to the auditorium which was later turned into a hotel. Undergoing many refurbishments since opening over a century ago, there have been a handful of dark periods for the theater, yet the interior has remained crimson and gold and has withstood modernisation, keeping some of its original components.
The famous theater has been home to some big-name productions including Legally Blonde, Beauty and the Beast, West Side Story and a limited run of Sunset Boulevard. The last musical to claim its home at the Palace was SpongeBob SquarePants which closed in September 2018. Between 2018 and 2024, huge renovations took place, and the theater was lifted 30ft higher to make space for commercial units underneath.
The Palace is one of a handful of Broadway theaters that’s had the honor of hosting the legendary Tony Awards; others include the Minskoff Theatre and Winter Garden Theatre.
