Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator (often known simply as Star Trek) is an arcade game developed by Sega and released in 1982. It is a first-person space shoot-'em-up game powered by Sega G80 hardware that uses vector graphics. Along with Fonz and Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom, it was one of the first licensed video games developed by Sega.

Gameplay

The game has the player control the U.S.S. Enterprise, who must save the Federation from Klingon warships. Star Trek makes use of synthesized speech, voiced by Leonard Nimoy.

History

Legacy

As well as being released in the arcades, Star Trek was brought to home computers and consoles of the day, including the Apple II, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 8-bit family, ColecoVision, Commodore 64, TI-99/4A and VIC-20. As neither of these systems can render vector graphics, the game uses raster graphics instead. This did allow some of the more advanced ports to add extra details to the scenery, though they were not able to scale it as smoothly. Some of the Atari versions have a controller overlay to help explain things. Many of these ports were also produced by Gremlin, by then renamed Sega Electronics.

An Intellivision version of the game was reportedly in development at some stage, but was later cancelled.

It is unlikely that this game will be re-released in the near future as Sega no longer own the rights to produce and distribute Star Trek games.
