William Shepard Rose III (born September 27, 1979) is an American television personality and businessman. He is best known as a main cast member on the Bravo reality television series Southern Charm and its spin-off RelationShep.

Early life

William Shepard Rose III[1][2] was born in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina[note 1][3][4][5] on September 27, 1979,[note 2][6][7][8][9] as the second of three children to William Shepard "Rip" Rose Jr. (born March 9, 1948), a lawyer, and Frances John "Fran" Rose (née Hobbs; born July 6, 1952), a housewife.[10][11][12] He has an elder sister, Katherine Cummings "Katie" Trotter (née Rose; born February 8, 1977), and a younger brother, Whitaker Boykin Rose (born July 1983),[13][14][15][16] both lawyers.[17][18] He grew up in Sea Pines.[19][20]

Education

Rose attended a private school, Hilton Head Preparatory School, and Episcopal High School, a boarding school in Alexandria, Virginia.[21][22][23][24]

Rose graduated from the University of Georgia with his Bachelor of Arts degree in business in 2002. He was a member of the Chi Phi fraternity.[25][26][27] He graduated from Vanderbilt University Owen Graduate School of Management with his Master of Business Administration degree in 2009.[28][29]

Family

Rose is related to the Boykin family - the family of which the Boykin Spaniel - the South Carolina state dog - is named,[30][31][32][33][34] through his paternal relations. The family became known after founding Boykin, South Carolina in 1755.[35][36][37] His paternal grandparents were Meta Cantey Rose (née Boykin), a socialite,[38] and William Shepard Rose,[39] an international businessman in the steel industry.[40] His uncle is B. Boykin Rose, the first South Carolina Department of Public Saftey director.[41] Other members of his family have been included in PBS documentaries.[42]

Rose is related to the Hobbs family through his maternal relations. The family became known after building the railroads out of Chicago.[43] His maternal grandparents were Truman McGill Hobbs,[44] a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama; having been appointed by the 39th President of the United States Jimmy Carter in 1980,[45] and Joyce Hobbs (née Cummings).[46] His great aunt was Edith Cummings, the first female athlete to be featured on the cover of TIME magazine in August 1924.[47] He is first cousins with his Southern Charm co-star Marcie Hobbs.[48][49]

Career

Rose worked as a real estate agent while he was living in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in his 20s.[50]

Television

Rose made his television debut on the Bravo[51] reality television series Southern Charm as a main cast member from the first season.[52][53] The first season was launched on March 3, 2014.[54]

Rose appeared on the web series Shepic Fail. The series focuses on Rose, his Southern Charm co-star Craig Conover and Hunter Gardner, and ran for four episodes launching on November 23, 2014.[55][56]

Rose appeared on the third spin-off from Southern Charm, RelationShep.[57][58] The series was announced on April 27, 2017,[59][60] focused on Rose as he looked for love,[61][62] and ran for six episodes launching on December 4, 2017.[63][64] The series was later canceled.[65][66]

Restaurants

Rose is the owner of The Commodore, a bar and grill in Charleston, South Carolina.[67] The restaurant opened on April 27, 2016.[68][69][70][71]

Rose is a co-owner of two establishments; The Palace Hotel[72][73] and The Alley,[74][75] both in Charleston.[76]

Acting

Rose made his debut as an actor, as Paramedic #2 in the action thriller film Reprisal.[77][78][79] The film was released on August 31, 2018.[80]

Other ventures

Rose, and his friends Jason Benjamin and Claude Pope founded the coastal wear line,[81] Shep Gear,[82] in June 2016.[83]

Rose made his debut as a stand-up comedian on April 23, 2018.[84]

Rose served as the announcer for the Charleston RiverDogs at a baseball game on May 1, 2018.[85]

Rose authored his memoir, Average Expectations: Lessons in Lowering the Bar (ISBN 978-1-9821-5980-1).[86] The book was published by Simon & Schuster on March 16, 2021.[87][88][89]

Charity work

Rose is the founder of a charitable trust. He donates to numerous charities every December.[90]

Rose supported the David M. Carmines Memorial Foundation in 2017. The organization was founded in memory of his childhood best friend Andrew Carmines' brother who died by cancer in 2001.[91]

Rose raised $25,000 for the people of the Bahamas following Hurricane Dorian in 2019.[92][93][94]

Personal life

Rose resides in Isle of Palms, South Carolina.[95][96][97] He has a French Bulldog named Lil Craig,[98][99] who splits his time with his parents.[100] His nickname, RelationShep, was given to him in 2003;[101][102] his moniker is the inspiration behind his Instagram handle.[103][104][105]

Rose has five nieces and nephews; three through Katherine and her husband John Trotter, and two through Whitaker and his wife Tiernan Rose.[106]

Rose is a member of the Jupiter Island Club, a private social club in Florida.[107][108]

Relationships

Rose was in a relationship with Danni Baird, prior to their casting on Southern Charm.[109][110][111]

Rose was in a relationship with orthodontics assistant Taylor Ann Green between March 2020 and July 2022.[112][113][114][115][116]

Controversy

Rose faced criticism in August 2019, after he posted a video to his Instagram Stories in which he could be heard mocking a woman who was collecting cans on the street in the East Village in New York City. He refused to apologize.[117] He later apologized.[118] He also deactivated his Twitter account and took a break from the social media platform.[119]

Politics

Rose publicly called out his former Southern Charm co-star and a former Treasurer of South Carolina, Thomas Ravenel in October 2020, after Ravenel's public support of the 45th President of the United States Donald Trump.[120]
