Sanamahism, also known as traditional Meitei religion, is one of the minority religions in Myanmar. It is mainly practised by the Meitei people in Myanmar.
History

[change | change source]Myanmar Meiteis, who live along the banks of the Ningthi river, don't have the culture of domestic poultry because they believe that God Sanamahi will leave their house if a hen sits on the roof of a house.[1][2]
Notable deities
[change | change source]Other than Sanamahi, the traditional Meitei deities worshipped widely by the Meitei people in Myanmar are Pakhangba, Yumjao Lairembi, Nongpok Ningthou, Panthoibi, Marjing, Thangjing, Leimarel Sidabi, among other.[3]

[change | change source]Myanmar Meiteis of Mandalay region do not keep a separate place inside the south-eastern corner of their houses dedicated to God Sanamahi.[4] However, the Myanmar Meiteis, who live along the banks of the Ningthi river, has the tradition of keeping a place for God Sanamahi (Meitei: ꯁꯅꯥꯃꯍꯤ) in their houses.[5][6]

Ancestor worship
[change | change source]Apokpa Khurumba (transl. ancestral worship) is practised by the Meitei people in Myanmar by offering shareng (transl. fresh water shark, Wallago attu) to the ancestors, who are respected as gods and goddesses. This is especially common among the Meiteis of the families of the Kakchingtabam (Meitei: ꯀꯛꯆꯤꯡꯇꯥꯕꯝ) and the Hajarimayum (Meitei: ꯍꯖꯥꯔꯤꯃꯌꯨꯝ).[7]
