Worship in the Synagogue
2
The Synagogue Worshipping God is important for Jews and although they think that most worship should take place in the home, the synagogue is a place where they go to worship, particularly on the Sabbath.
3
Arriving at the synagogue
When they arrive at the synagogue on the sabbath, Jews greet each other with the words “Shabat Shalom.” This means; have a peaceful Sabbath. Men and boys over 13 sit downstairs and women and children sit upstairs in the balcony.
4
Clothing Everyone will cover their head in the synagogue. This shows respect for God. This may be for a few reasons: They believe God is above and so they are showing fear of God by covering their heads. It makes them distinct from other faiths. In roman times slaves had to cover their heads and so it shows that the Jews are slaves before God. Married women wear a head scarf or a hat. Men and boys over thirteen wear a kippah. Some people will also wear a Tallit. This is a prayer shawl worn over the shoulders.

The service includes: Set prayers Readings from the Torah (Old Testament) A sermon Singing Psalms Private Prayer The service is led by a Rabbi (teacher). The Rabbi will: Lead the prayers Read the Torah Explain the reading (sermon)
