Everything you do in life
Chapter 1 World of Earth Science What is Science? The process of observing and studying things in our world. Everything you do in life involves Science!!
2
Section 1-1 Branches of Earth Science
Geology- the study of the Earth Meteorology- the study of the atmosphere Astronomy- the study of the objects in space Oceanography- the study of the Earth’s oceans
3
Which of the following branch of Earth Science would each topic belong?
Volcanoes Thunderstorms Ocean Waves Planets Hurricanes Beach Erosion Earthquakes Rocks and Minerals Constellations Tornadoes Fossils Gulf Stream Currents
4
How many movies or TV shows can you think of that involve the 4 Branches of Earth Science?
5
Section 2 Scientific Method
Steps that scientists use to solve a problem Ask a question Form Hypothesis Test Hypothesis Analyze results Draw Conclusion
6
Every experiment needs a control and variable
Control (What I keep the same) Independent Variable (what I change) Dependent Variable (what I observe)
7
Section 1-2 Scientific Method
A step-by-step process used to solve a problem Steps of Scientific Method 1. Ask a question 2. Make a Hypothesis 3. Test your hypothesis 4. Analyze the results 5. Draw conclusion
8
Setting up your Experiment
You MUST identify the following: Hypothesis- prediction of your experiment Control- what I keep the same Independent Variable- what I change Dependent Variable- what I observe Now develop a step by step process to test your hypothesis. Include a Materials list.
9
Theories and Laws What is a theory?
An explanation backed by repeated test results What is a Law? A rule of nature that describes a behavior.
10
Section 1-3 Scientific Models
What is the best way to solve problems? Have a strategy Use Critical Thinking Others? In Science we use the Scientific Method
11
Lab Activity Do Not Copy!!
Which paper towel is the most absorbent? Using the Scientific Method, you are to develop an experiment to answer the question presented. You will be given the following materials: 3 sheets of different paper towel graduated cylinder beaker or cup scissors Dropper Ruler
12
Section 1-4 Measurement and Safety
International System of Units (SI) or Metric System Length- meter (m) Mass- gram (g) Volume- liter (l) Temperature- Celsius or Kelvin Weight- Newton (N) based on gravitational force Metric System is easier to use because it uses base 10 system.
13
Converting Metric Units
Kilo Hecta Deca (m,l,g) Deci Centi Milli Always move decimal in direction you want to go!
14
Volume, Area and Density
Area = Length X Width 2 ways to find Volume Six sided object (box) Volume = L x W x H Irregular object- Use water displacement method to find volume Density- amount of matter an object occupies D= mass volume
