Millard South High School I think I will write about…

What is Ideas and Content? Ideas and content deals with WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY! THINK OF… An important main idea Interesting details “Showing”, not just telling A clear and meaningful purpose Something unusual or surprising that works

Questions to consider… What is the most important thing I want my reader to know? What details will they need to know to understand better? Can my readers picture my writing in their heads? What do I want my reader(s) to think or do? How is this different than any other piece of writing? Is this a fun and interesting topic? Is my topic too narrow or too broad?

STEP #1 How do I begin? 1.Start by reading the prompt 2.Brainstorm your thoughts on an outline or web. ASK… How do I feel about the topic? What do I know about the topic? What can I describe in a lot of detail? What will make my readers want to keep reading? What personal experiences do I have about the topic?

STEP #2 Create an exciting HOOK! Start with something that grabs your reader’s attention… EXAMPLES: My mother never said “no” to her children’s music. Where do friends fall on your priority list? Roaring tigers, deadly snakes, poisonous spiders, and all of them safe to be around—but only at the zoo.

STEP #3 Use exciting details---Don’t just tell, SHOW Example: Jane dressed in an unusual way. Let’s make this better…. Jane came to school today in pink and white polka dot leggings and a purple and yellow checkered shirt. Her curly yellow and orange hair looked like the sun’s rays reaching out to grab me. Her nose was as red as Rudolph the Reindeer’s. She was a site to see! Which way makes you picture it in your head better?

STEP # 4 MAKE SURE YOU ANSWER THE ‘WH’ QUESTIONS! You will need to answer… Who What Where When Why How WHO WHAT WHERE WHEN HOW WHY

Consider these questions… Is my writing focused on one main idea? Is my topic manageable? Is it too big, or do I need to narrow it down? Is my main idea supported with interesting details? Does my writing include interesting and original ideas? Do I know my topic well?
