Purpose of a Data Overview • The purpose of this data overview is to address the past three year’s CRCT scores for sixth grade in the core content areas at Daniell Middle School with a focus on Science. We will briefly compare Daniell’s sixth grade school results to the overall Cobb County sixth grade results to help us address our major strengths and weaknesses. By focusing on the strengths and weaknesses within our school, we will help to improve our student learning in the core subjects, specifically Science.

Discussion Slide • Why do you think the number of students meeting or exceeding the standards in sixth grade are the lowest in the subject area of Science? • Why do you think Reading maintains the highest pass rate on the CRCT?

Discussion ~ Lets Talk About It • Overall Strengths in Science: ▫ Males tend to have a strength in science and have been outperforming females yearly ▫ Economically disadvantaged continues to be the strongest subgroup and is still growing ▫ Asians, Whites/Non-Hispanics, and American Indians continue to be the strongest race and ethnicity groups • Overall Weaknesses in Science: • Females are growing, but they are still lower than males • Students with Disabilities struggle to maintain and grow on the Science CRCT

Summary of Data Overview • The major 6 th grade strength by far is Reading. The major weakness falls to Science. ▫ Reading continues to outperform or meet the county scores while Science struggles to meet the county scores. 2013 marks the first recent year Science surpassed the Cobb County scores. • The number of students meeting or exceeding the standards in science is considerably less than all four other subject areas. ▫ The male population continues to outperform females yearly. Does this correlate to more males liking the subject matter? ▫ The number of Students with Disabilities and English Language Learners are slowly improving. See what has changed and how to continue to strengthen it. ▫ Two demographic areas: the Black/African-Americans and Hispanics, are making gains but continue to perform below that of their peers in the 6 th grade. Next goal: Analyze why these students perform below that of their peers.
