There are more than two hundred universities in Turkey, of which at least a quarter are located in Istanbul, making the city a great place to get a higher education.

At the same time, the situation in the industry is atypical: we are used to the fact that the oldest universities usually provide the highest quality training and have great opportunities, but in Turkey this rule does not work so strictly. The oldest Turkish university is five centuries old, but the highest positions in national and international rankings are occupied by young educational institutions that have opened their doors to applicants in the last 20-30 years, after joining the Bologna process: the authorities have spent huge amounts of money to ensure that these new universities, their teachers and equipment meet the highest international standards.

By 2023, Turkey is firmly established in the global Top 50 strongest higher education systems in the world, ranking 41st there. At the same time, expat students are very welcome in Turkey, including from Russia and other CIS countries. Turkey is distinguished from other European and many Asian countries by the fact that graduates of Russian schools can enter universities immediately after the 11th grade, without an additional year. In addition, there are universities in Turkey that are ready to accept applicants with the results of the exam and other standardized tests, for example, the Kazakh UNT, and the standardized Turkish YÖS test can be taken for Russian.

Advantages of Universities in Istanbul

Turkish universities offer several advantages:

Value for Money Despite the fact that Turkish universities have firmly established themselves in the top ranks of international rankings for universities in developing countries, and technical universities have prestigious awards and accreditations (such as ABET), tuition fees in state universities here are very affordable.

Scholarship Programs Despite the low tuition fees, Turkish universities are willing to support students who cannot afford their education. Many private universities are ready to cover up to 100% of tuition costs, and a 20-40% discount is available to almost all students with above-average grades. In addition, there are various government scholarships and grants available for both Turkish citizens and expatriates.

Language Options Statistics show that 72% of programs in state universities are offered in Turkish, while 28% are in English, with the number of English programs constantly increasing.

Lower Requirements in Private Universities Non-state higher education institutions often admit students with lower levels of proficiency in Turkish or English. Without excluding applicants, universities offer various paid courses and programs to help bridge the language gap.

Exchange Opportunities Many Turkish universities participate in student mobility programs such as Erasmus, Mevlana, and Farabi, allowing students to gain valuable experience in foreign universities and become familiar with the cultural and social realities of another country.

Disadvantages or Specifics of Istanbul Universities

Lack of University Autonomy Turkish authorities closely monitor the national higher education system, exerting strict control over the management of educational institutions, even down to tactical and managerial decisions. This is part of the government's efforts to combat foreign influence, but it can lead to archaic academic and managerial practices.

Quality of Housing University dormitories in Turkey are typically small and not always well-maintained. Renting private accommodation can be an alternative solution.

Low Support Quality Despite a significant number of expatriate students, the level of infrastructure is currently insufficient. There may be difficulties with regular counseling and support at different stages, as well as challenges related to the adaptation period.

Communication Difficulties Some students face communication challenges because either they or their instructors do not have a strong command of English. Some universities offer adaptation programs and courses, while others expect applicants to address language proficiency issues on their own.

Admission to Istanbul Universities

Russian applicants can gain admission to Istanbul universities through one of three ways:

  1. After Completing School: This option is available to all graduates of Russian secondary educational institutions, regardless of their type.

  2. Transfer from a University: After completing three years of studies at a Russian university, students can transfer to a Turkish university.

  3. Through a Foundation or Equivalent Program: Applicants who struggle with language or lack basic skills and competencies can enroll in a half-year or year-long preparatory program.

To apply, you typically need to provide:

  • School diploma, bachelor's, or master's degree
  • TOEFL/IELTS/CAE/TÖMER exam results to prove English or Turkish language proficiency
  • SAT/ACT/GMAT/GRE or Turkish YÖS test results (in some cases, Russian EGE may be accepted)

Requirements may vary depending on the university, program, and course.

The cost of education can vary widely. State universities generally offer very affordable programs, with tuition for bachelor's programs in Turkish ranging from $450 to $6,000, while programs in English can range from $1,500 to $16,000.

Best Universities in Istanbul

According to the latest QS ranking, three Istanbul universities made it into the top 500 universities globally: Koç University, Sabancı University, and Boğaziçi University. These institutions, though relatively young, have rapidly climbed the rankings, thanks in part to significant financial support and the assistance of the European Research Council.

  • Sabancı University: Established by the Sabancı Foundation, which supports more than 40 secondary and higher education institutions, libraries, and research centers across Turkey. Key areas of study include social and public sciences, business, economics, and finance.

  • Koç University: Founded in 1993 by Turkish billionaire Vehbi Koç, it quickly gained recognition in rankings for young and innovative universities. It offers strong programs in chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and biology.

  • Boğaziçi University: Founded by Americans Robert and Hamlin in 1863 as an American high school, it later became a state university. It maintains English as the working language, offering a variety of programs, with IT and information technologies being particularly promising.
