This type of coverage doesn’t typically fall under my wheel house but there’s an interesting tidbit about it that I found intriguing. According to rumors, which at this point have all but been confirmed, at IBC in Amsterdam, Sony will unveil the successor to the PXW-FS7MKII, which is pictured above. As for where the confirmation came from, which is a bit hilarious, according to the European Broadcast Distribution Network, Sony

will introduce the NEW 6K Full Frame PXW-FX9 camera. It is scheduled to ship December 2019.

This camera can be seen as the new Full Frame, 6K version of the popular PXW-FS7 with a new proprietary AI Autofocus System (Face/Eye detection) as available on SONY flagship DSLR cameras and IBIS.

Like I said, I don’t typically cover Sony Professional products, but what I find intriguing is how Autofocus has turned into a key pillar and leveraging point amongst various Sony products. From Alpha cameras to finally the Xperia 5 and now the FX9, Sony is incorporating their new autofocus capability which can track both human and animal eyes. This advancement, which nobody else has been able to meet, let alone exceed in the world of photography and videography, can be the difference between getting a shot or completely missing it.

To see the tech be incorporated in such wide variety of products showcases the potential Sony has when different divisions work in unison with each other. Unfortunately until now, Xperia had always suffered in order to not cannibalize Alpha and Cybershot sales. Ironically and perhaps unsurprisingly, the cannibilization did happen, just not from Sony. If the once dominant electronic maker had been able to leverage their advanced image processing and sensor technology from the start in Xperia, perhaps their fortunes would have been vastly different.

So while it might be too late for Xperia, it’s good to see Sony share the tech internally and incorporate it in other products that aren’t Alpha, which is where it originated from.
