How to refresh furniture hardware

Painting or refinishing an old piece of furniture can be fun, but what do you do about the hardware? You have two choices- replace the knobs and handles with new ones, or clean and paint the old ones. I chose to paint the old ones on my student desk makeover.   Here they are before- pretty gross!   I took a sheet of 600 grit sandpaper and started sanding away the grime. Make sure you don't use too coarse of  sandpaper or you will leave scratches that will show through your paint. You want to sand just hard enough to remove the grime and scuff the handle enough for the paint to stick. Here it is after some sanding: After sanding I cleaned each handle with alcohol and then let it thoroughly dry. I painted my handles with Rustoleum satin nickel, according to the directions on the can.   I'm happy with my new updated handles and  a can of spray paint was cheaper than new hardware. Student Desk makeover

This post contains affiliate links. They don't cost you for clicking but provide me with a few cents if you purchase from them.   I'm excited to share my desk makeover with you this week! Last year my hubby built a counter height craft table for me and I refurbished a bar stool to go with it. I love the table and hope to share it one day too. I just need to finish getting my craft room in order because there is no way to photograph just the table. (We make slow progress around here.)

Bare wood to black magic

Okay that was a cheesy post title, but wait until you see the before and afters. It really is like magic. The hubby and I recently completed our first successful furniture painting project. (I said first "successful" because I painted a laminate cabinet once that was a disaster.)   I acquired this chest of drawers from my parents. It was purchased 48 years ago when my brother was born to store baby clothes and things. It was bare wood and has never been finished, stained or painted. It has been in the family all these years. My grandmother later used it for storage in a utility room and it suffered some water damage. The hubby cut new drawer bottoms and a new back for this piece before we painted it.       Some light sanding and Kiltz took care of the remaining water damage.  After priming, I painted it with an interior satin enamel paint from Home Depot. I used Behr paint but had them do a custom color match to Glidden...

Craft room bar stool makeover

This post contains Amazon affiliate links. It does not cost you to click through but if you make  a purchase from my link, I may earn a small commission.   I hinted a few weeks ago that my hubby built a new craft table for me and I'm redoing my craft room/office. I'm not yet ready to reveal the table because we assembled it in place in the room and I've got to finish the rest of the room before taking photos.   I can share my new stool that I redid to go with the table. The table is counter height so I needed a bar stool for the times I want to sit and work.     I picked up one in good shape at a local thrift shop. Here's the before:   It was still in good shape as is, but I wanted something fun and bright to go with my table.  So I cleaned it, painted it with some left over paint from the table project, and then put a new seat on it. The paint was a flat interior. The Home Depot associate recommended that I go w...

9 Painted furniture transformations

The hubby and I are currently working on updating a couple of pieces of furniture with paint. You can probably guess from my round up here that one is an old dresser. I've learned that painting is a practice in patience. I'm ready to be done, and we're down to some touch ups and top coats but there are things that you can't control sometimes. So... until I complete my own, here are 9 ideas for transforming furniture with paint.   via Power of Paint     Yellow dresser     Green painted dresser     Red dresser       Two colors of blue     Grey with white lines     Distressed white dresser Desk makeover     Side table makeover
