Hunting Food

Environmental Foods
The Eastern Woodlands Indians were very resourceful with their food. They hunted only the animals in their environment and used every part of the body. Some of the foods they ate were:
- Fish
- Deer
- Bear
- Rabbit
- Moose
- White Tail Deer
- Caribou

Cooking
The women cooked and prepared the food once the men got back from hunting. The men would usually bring back enough food to last the next few days. The women cooked meat by hanging it over a fire, kind of like grilling, except it wasn't a grill at all.

Cauldrons
The Eastern Woodlands Indians had large pots -----> called 'cauldrons'. These helped make stew and soup. One of the most popular stews they had was called the 'Three Sisters Chow". The Three Sisters are corn, beans, and squash. The cauldrons would hang from a wood tripod over a fire to boil.

Fun Facts
Welcome to the new world...
The Eastern Woodlands Indians cut open the stomach of a squirrel and smear the guts on a 4-day-old baby to welcome him/her to the new world.
Before the Iroquois
The Iroquois originally called themselves Kanonsionni, meaning people of the Longhouse (the name of the shelter they live in), but today they go by the name Haudenosaunee. Originally five tribes made up this larger group, but in 1722 a sixth tribe joined the Iroquois nation and they also became known as the Six Nations.
