CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Tyler Honeycutt didn’t expect to work in a steakhouse.

“Generally when people think of steakhouses, it’s a stuffy atmosphere,” Honeycutt said. “Maybe a little bit more old school than people would originally think.”

He thought he’d head a much different restaurant.

“Something smaller and a lot more pretentious, haha,” Honeycutt said.

Working in Charleston, long the culinary capital of the Carolinas, Honeycutt moved back to Charlotte to join the growing movement of chef-driven restaurants.

As the new executive chef at Oak Steakhouse, Honeycutt is bringing a rare kind of sizzle to well made stakes.

“Here we’re trying to do more of a modern take on a classic steakhouse,” Honeycutt said. “Push the boundaries a little bit further. Try some new things.”

New things like farm-to-table appetizers, locally-harvested ingredients, and a focus on fresh flavor.

But still serving up the classics.

“I think it really has opened my eyes to the possibilities of what we can actually do with a steakhouse,” Honeycutt said. “How far you really can push it.”
