[Community] Troubleshooting SKSE64 and MO2
This thing comes out often. I wrote instructions for a forum post reply and decided to make a dedicated post for this.

Download SKSE64 from following page, to make sure it is indeed up to date. Steam version has sometimes issues.

The proper version is: Current SE build:
https://skse.silverlock.org/

Installer version should work correctly. If not, then download 7z archive. It opens easily with free 7-zip application, which is pretty much the standard tool for gamers these days.

https://www.7-zip.org/

If you downloaded archive, then make sure that your Windows User Account settings are not blocking it. That annoying feature is not related to SKSE64, but Windows itself.
  • Before opening the archive: right click it with your mouse.
  • Properties > General
  • Security > Unblock

Drop files in to your ...Steam Games\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition folder. Steam Games folder is under your installation folder. By default, it is under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam.

Relevant files are the following. You can safely ignore other files, unless you are a mod author. Folder marked as src only includes script sources for SKSE64. It is not needed for playing.

Note that DLL-version is subject to changes, when game updates again. Markings x, y, zz in DLL mark the version of which SKSE64 is released.
  • skse64_loader.exe
  • skse64_x_y_zz.dll

If you can not locate the folder, then you can access to it from Steam client.

  • Steam client > Library
  • Right click The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition
  • Properties > Local Files > Browse Local Files...

Restart Mod Organizer 2. If you have downloaded and installed files correctly, then MO2 should automatically detect SKSE64 launcher. If not, or if it fails to launch:
  • Run the vanilla launcher again. Make sure that it has configured game correctly, or SKSE will not find the correct INI-file for the game.
  • Right click skse64_loader.exe file. Select option Run as Administrator. Windows will remember the selection.

If MO2 can not locate SKSE launcher at all. (It should locate it automatically.)
  • Open MO2.
  • From right hand panel (big) application list: <Edit...>
  • Title: type SKSE.
  • Binary: browse to skse64_loader.exe on your hard drive.
  • Click Add to include SKSE among applications.

If SKSE still does not run, then the issue might be with your security application. Add MO2 and SKSE64 as exceptions for it. Instructions depend on which application you are using and are usually found from developer page.

There is a reddit list of SKSE dependent mods -- I think you may have seen it. Do you think it is useful? I haven't combed it thoroughly yet.

Do I overlook something, or is this just basic 'how to install SKSE in MO'?

Pretty much, yes. I originally wrote it as troubleshooting instructions for a question in Skyrim discussions. Perhaps I should have reconsidered the name, but I think it will do.

I haven't checked it yet.

and why not just simply link to a Gopher video instead of having the work of maintaining 2 new threads? :o

The same reason why Sim Settlements has forums. Not every person is able to follow videos.

Plus, I don't mind keeping up with posts. I am a writer type of guy. :)

Ticked, and stelth bumps.
This needs to go back to the top, in case people are having issues.
It will sink after a few weeks, but lets keep it at the top for a few days.

This is important info as some prefer a text version as opposed to a video.

Ilja I added this to my new troubleshooting guide on skse64 and yes it is also labeled as "troubleshooting" because many times folks new to modding complain that x mod doesn't work when in fact x mod was dependent on skse64 but skse64 was not installed correctly.
Because the dependent mod was not updated is yet another problem. I could go on.

and just like some prefer text some for whatever the reason prefer guides.

it's all about getting this type info to the users.
