Daniel W. Hinton, age 70 of Miles City, passed away at the V.A. Community Living Center in Miles City.
Dan was born on March 14, 1949 in Missoula, MT. He was the son of David Hinton and Mary Snider. He grew up and graduated high school from Stevensville, MT. At the age of 19, he enlisted with the United States Army and served our country proud during the Vietnam War. Dan served in Ben Het, Viet Nam from 1966 – 1971, and the Reserves from 1972 – 73. While serving, Dan earned the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service & Campaign medals, the M-14 Marksmanship Medal and the Bronze Star Medal. After being honorable discharged, Dan moved back home where he worked various jobs as a cook and with the Forest Service.
The VA Community Living Center was a big part of Dan’s later years, where he was involved in helping fellow Veteran’s to keep going. He expressed his strong beliefs in God and his country and had strong emotional connections to his service in Vietnam, and his brothers who served with him there. Patriotic programs, parades and ceremonies always brought tears of pride. During his stay at the VA, Community Living Center he participated in many pinning ceremonies, receiving his Viet Nam beads, and his Viet Nam pin. He took pride in presenting families with a Veteran’s certificate after every Memorial service.
He particularly enjoyed being in the 4th of July and Bucking Horse Sale parades, where he was able to wear his medals proudly and pass candy to the onlookers, who always clapped and showed appreciation for the CLC Veterans.
He liked Rock ‘n Roll, and listened to a band just a week before his death. He loved all animals, feeding the birds (even parts of his lunch) and watching them nest. He loved facility pets and all the dogs of the neighborhood who knew his pockets well. They were always loaded with biscuits for them! He especially loved “Lizzy” and “Charlie”.
The past few months were filled with battling a chronic illness. The family and staff would like to thank the DCI staff who got him through every treatment.
Dan is survived by his father David Hinton of Victor, MT; half brothers: Blen Hinton of Columbia, TN and Leonard Roberts of Helena and a sister Barbara Roberts of Hamilton. Dan is also survived by his caretakers and family who cared for him at the VA Community Living Center
Memorial service for Dan will be held on Monday, October 28, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the V. A Community Living Center Chapel in Miles City. Inurnment will follow in the Eastern Montana Veterans Cemetery with full military honors provided by VFW Post # 1579. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.stevensonandsons.com.

Dan, we “bonded” over Beach Boys music and morning visits during my walks with Charlie! He will miss those “hidden” treats pulled from your pockets and still looks for the bread crumbs you left for the birds!

Dan had the biggest heart!!! When he knew someone was hurting it hurt him too! Dan was very proud of his service and wasn’t scared to shed a tear of pride when sharing his stories. But most of all he was a good friend!!! I will truly miss him!!! Rest in peace my friend!!!! And he gave the best hugs!!!!

I loved taking care of Dan when I worked at the VA. My Little four year old loved climbing up in his wheelchair & chatting with him. He always shared his snacks with her.
He loved my senior lab, Scrapper & always had goodies for him.
There were many evenings when I would confide in him, and we would both be teary-eyed. I loved him very much& think of him often.
God Speed, Dan….the gentlemen at the VA will certainly miss you, too!
