The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid console that was released on March 3, 2017 and is the successor to the Wii U. It comes with two detachable controllers that are known as the Joy-Con. Games can be purchased physically from retail stores or digitally from the Nintendo eShop. The Switch supports three types of play modes.

  • TV mode - The console is placed in the dock that is connected to a TV.
  • Tabletop mode - The console is placed on a surface with the stand out and controllers detached.
  • Handheld mode - The console is played portable with both controllers attached.

The back of game cases have icons that indicate which modes are supported. The Switch also supports amiibo figures for compatible games. The figures can be read by tapping them on the right stick of the Joy-Con or the Switch logo on the front of the Pro Controller. A revision of the Switch was released in mid-August 2019 that featured an improved CPU resulting in better battery life.

Nintendo Switch Online[edit | edit source]

Nintendo Switch Online is Nintendo's online service for the Nintendo Switch. Subscribers to the service get access to online play in supported titles, as well as classic games from the NES, SNES, and Game Boy. Save data is backed up to the cloud for compatible games. An optional "Expansion Pack", released in 2011, adds Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy Advance games. Unlike the Virtual Console from previous Nintendo systems, these games are not made available for purchase, but are simply included with a subscription.

Controllers[edit | edit source]

The Switch has two types of controllers that are compatible with all models. Up to eight controllers can be wirelessly paired depending on the type and features used.

Joy-Con[edit | edit source]

The Joy-Con is the main controller of the Switch and it consists of a separate left and right controller that come in a variety of colors. They can be used either attached to the console, attached to the Joy-Con Grip, or detached depending on the game. For motion controls, they can be attached to a wrist strap. The right controller has a NFC reader for use with amiibo figures. When pairing with the console, each left and right unit separately counts as one controller.

Pro Controller[edit | edit source]

The Pro Controller is a more traditional wireless controller for the Switch. It communicates via Bluetooth and is charged with a USB-C cable. It supports motion controls and also has a NFC reader. When pairing with the console, the Pro Controller counts as one controller.

Joy-Con Wheel[edit | edit source]

The Joy-Con Wheel is a steering wheel accessory with a slot for either the left or right Joy-Con controller. It also has larger SL button and SR button buttons. While intended for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it is compatible with other racing games that can use gyro controls.

Ring-Con[edit | edit source]

The Ring-Con and Leg Strap are exercise accessories that were included with Ring Fit Adventure. The Joy-Con can be inserted into both to translate real-life exercises to in-game movements. The Leg Strap was also included in Nintendo Switch Sports.
