Create & manage a group on Google Pay

Google Pay now allows you to create a group to chat with multiple people at once.

Create a group

From the discovery page

Important: The group creator is the default group admin.
  1. On your device, open Google Pay .
  2. Tap on the search bar.
  3. Scroll and tap New group.
  4. Select the contacts you want to add. You can add up to 100 members.
  5. Tap Add.

From the chat page

Important: The group creator is the default group admin.
  1. On your device, open Google Pay .
  2. Open the chat of a person you want to add to a group.
  3. Tap More.
  4. Tap Start new group.
  5. Select the contacts you want to add. You can add up to 100 members.
  6. Tap Add.

Manage a group

Edit the group name

Important: Any group member can edit the group name. The group name is visible to all members.
  1. On your device, open Google Pay .
  2. Go to the group you want to edit.
  3. In the top right, tap More   More and then Group Settings.
    • You can also tap the group conversation app bar and then Group Settings.
  4. Tap the current group name.
  5. Enter a new group name of up to 20 characters. 

Add group members

Important: Groups can have up to 100 members.

Invite your contacts

  1. On your device, open Google Pay .
  2. Go to the group chat you want to add members to.
  3. At the top right, tap More More and then Group Settings.
    • You can also tap the group conversation app bar and then Group Settings.
  4. Tap Add people Add.
  5. Select the contacts that you want to invite.
  6. Tap Add.

Invite by link

  1. On your device, open Google Pay .
  2. Go to the group chat you want to add members to.
  3. In the top right, tap More More and then Group Settings and then Invite people by link.
    • You can also tap the group conversation app bar and then Group Settings and then Invite people by link.
  4. Select an invite option:
    • To copy the invite link to your clipboard, tap Copy link.
    • To share the invite link via WhatsApp, Messenger, Twitter, or Facebook, tap Share link.
    • To reset an expired invite link, tap Reset link.

Invite by QR code

  1. On your device, open Google Pay .
  2. Go to the group chat you want to add members to.
  3. In the top right, tap More More and then Group Settings and then Invite people via QR code.
  4. To have people join your group, download and share the QR code.

Tip: To reset your QR code, in the top right of the screen where you have the QR code, click More More, then select Reset QR. Your current link and QR code will be deactivated and replaced with a new one.

Remove group members

Important: Only the group admin can remove group members.
  1. On your device, open Google Pay .
  2. Go to the group chat you want to remove members from.
  3. At the top right, tap More More and then Group Settings.
    • You can also tap the group conversation app bar and then Group Settings.
  4. In the group members section, select the contacts that you want to remove.
  5. Tap Remove from group.

Leave a group

Important: After you leave a group, the chat history is removed. If the admin leaves the group, the second person to join is the new admin.
  1.  On your device, open Google Pay .
  2. Go to the group you want to leave.
  3. In the top right, tap More More and then Group Settings and then Leave group.
    • You can also tap the group conversation app bar and then Group Settings and then Leave group.

Tip: You can delete the group and chat history when you leave a group. In the group conversation, in the top right, select Delete group.

Turn off notifications for a group

  1. On your device, open Google Pay .
  2. Go to the group you want to mute.
  3. At the top right, tap More More and then Group Settings and then Mute Notifications.
    • You can also tap the group conversation app bar and then Group Settings and then Mute Notifications.
  4. Turn notifications off.

Turn off notifications for all messages

  1. On your device, open Google Pay .
  2. At the top right, tap on the profile picture.
  3. Go to Settings and then Notifications & emails.
  4. For "Chat messages," turn off notifications. This controls both private and group chat messages.

Report an issue

  1.  On your device, open Google Pay .
  2. Select the group that you want to report the issue.
  3. In the top right, tap More More and then Report group and then Report.

Note: Please note that Google Pay will review the group and its recent messages for spam and other activity.
