UNAKAZU is an unagi (eel) specialty restaurant between Toyama and Tateyama. You'll need a car to get here. The menu offers Unagi Don (eel rice bowl), Unaju (eel rice box) and Unagi Hitsumabushi (eel enjoyed 3 ways). Both the rice bowl and rice box offer "nakamushi", which is not only eel on top of the rice, but also sandwiched halfway between the rice. I recommend that! You can also order extra rice and/or eel organs with that. The Hitsumabushi is a Nagoya original. The way to eat that is (1) eel and rice (2) add toppings to eel and rice (3) add tea to eel and rice (4) repeat the version(s) you like. Hitsumabushi is famous. I prefer a good Unaju, however. At night, there is beer food like horse sashimi and other goodies. It gets packed in summer, because unagi is considered a stamina food for the hot summer. However, connoisseurs will eat unagi starting late autumn to October, as that is the time unagi starts to put on more fat in preparation for hibernation. Enjoy!
