Sorcery

Draw two cards, then discard two cards.

Turbulent Dreams/Devastating Dreams useful effects that now draw cards

Forbid reusable counterspell seems good

Prismari Command one of the best Swiss army knives

Frantic Search/Faithless Looting/Breakthrough/Read the Runes cheap and efficient looting

Cephalid Coliseum land looting

Masticore old school cool now becomes an engine

Anger to compliment the Wonder

All this discard Squee, Goblin Nabobfoil would be valuable

I had the opportunity to run a few games today(and won 1!) with this deck and I definitively agree surveil is a great keyword to focus on for this deck, often couldn't stay on curve into Narset's engine on curve without one or two bigger spells already in the graveyard to cast for free.

Below changes made:

Curate> Preordain

Otherworldly Gaze > Serum Visions

Faithless Looting > Stormchaser's Talent (Maybe I'm missing something here, but this deck doesn't much care for recursion to hand and upgrading it doesn't trigger prowess/mage craft. Too expensive for a mediocre synergy)

Unauthorized Exit > Swords to Plowshares

Excise the Imperfect > Wear / Tear

Wheel of Fate > Lock and Load (Fantastic call, Lock and Load is a little slower and honestly is not an efficient finisher for the CMC slot it fills)

I like the cuts you made but it hurts to see Faithless Looting out. Made for this strategy.

Forbid > Counterspell

Curate > Preordain

Otherworldly Gaze > Serum Visions

Excise the Imperfect > Wear / Tear

Unauthorized Exit > Swords to Plowshares

I see that Inevitable Betrayal 0 CMC tech... No Wheel of Fate!?

DemonDragonJ on Modern Banlist

With December 16's banned and restricted announcement, I have removed Faithless Looting, Green Sun's Zenith, Mox Opal, and Splinter Twin from this list and added Amped Raptor, Jegantha, the Wellspring, and The One Ring to this list, and I am very sorry that I took so long to update it, as I have been very busy, with Christmas approaching.

I think this sort of deck really wants to do 3 things:

  1. Get dredgers into the yard quickly so you can start dredging. There are 2 main ways Modern decks have done this, traditional dredge decks which use Faithless Looting vs. Crabvine decks that use Hedron Crab and Stitcher's Supplier to self-mill

  2. Multi-draw spells to enable dredge so you start snowballing FAST. Again, Faithless Looting in classic dredge. But black has access to some decent draw spells too like Sign in Blood or Cling to Dust

  3. More payoffs that come out of the yard. Usually this comes in the form of Prized Amalgam, Silversmote Ghoul (off of creeping chill), Bloodghast, and Vengevine. Nethergoyf and Souls of the Lost are new contenders but unlike the others you don't get them from the yard for free.

If you do all of these things, you'll have a deck which looks pretty close to a competitively built dredge or crabvine list. Which maybe isn't the "head held high fair game of magic" you're looking for. But maybe you can take partial inspiration from some of these decks while keeping true to your theme!

Companion really isn't working out for anything. Yorion, Sky Nomad and Lurrus of the Dream-Den welcome Jegantha, the Wellspring to the land of the Modern lost.

Reanimator's gotten a lot of new toys since Faithless Looting got banned, especially in MH2. I'd like to see it float back up the ranks a little bit. I suppose it would be too much for another Golgari Grave-Troll unban? That worked really well last time, right? I'm sure it'll be fine. What's the worst that could happen? There's a lot of options for graveyard hate right now, especially that Surgical Extraction, and Rest in Peace and Leyline of the Void can still be viable when they're needed. Graveyard-omancy is so hard right now...

I'm interested to see Psychic Frog survive. Not super surprised, but I had it at an outside chance of being banned. It's very color-restricted, but it's been a good engine for several decks. I feel like it's right at the top line for Modern utility.

I am expecting to see Green Sun's Zenith eat a ban again. I honestly can't believe it was unbanned. Excited to see some of the decks that come about thanks to the unbanning. I think overall, it is a good change, but I am sort of expecting to see Green Sun's Zenith and Faithless Looting eat a ban again. I'll definitely be abusing Green Sun's Zenith while it is legal though.

legendofa on MASSIVE EDH RC ban list …

Mortlocke I appreciate the response. And I get the feeling of key cards being banned, both for deck building and for finances (Extended -> Modern Reanimator Dredge: Golgari Grave-Troll, Dread Return, Deathrite Shaman, Bridge from Below, Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis, Faithless Looting,...), and the turn 1 eight mana was kind of an exaggeration. I don't think there's too much to worry about, though. Unless I'm forgetting something, the last ban was Golos, Tireless Pilgrim more than three years ago, so the RC doesn't seem to be super ban-happy. Sol Ring isn't going anywhere for now, and the other fast mana cards speed the game up by one turn, not three, so I think they're safe too. I might be naively optimistic, but I think the fetch lands and ABUR duals are as much a part of the game as Sol Ring, and again they don't provide 3+ mana. I'm more concerned about Strip Mine and Wasteland, honestly.
