Spain National Football Team: A look at England’s Euro 2024 final opposition

Everything you need to know about the Spain national football team, including their history, manager, and more.

England are preparing themselves for a historic clash against Spain in the final of Euro 2024, with both sides looking to etch themselves into footballing folk law.

Ollie Watkins’ last-minute winner against the Netherlands on Wednesday evening, was the latest chapter in England’s eventful Euros story.

Reaching back-to-back Euro finals for the first time in their history, Gareth Southgate and his side will be looking to right the wrongs of their last European final and get their hands on the coveted trophy.

To do so, they will have to overcome a very impressive Spain side, who have won every single game at the Championships so far.

Who are the Spain national team?

The Spain national team are the football side that represents the nation of Spain in men’s international competitions

What is the population of Spain?

The population of Spain is currently 47.4 million, making it one of the biggest nations at Euro 2024.

Spain National Team founding year

The Spanish football federation was first founded in 1909 but did not play their first international match until 1920.

Since its formation, La Roja have participated in 16 World Cups (winning one in 2010) and 12 European Championships (winning two in 2008 and 2012).

They also won the UEFA Nations League in 2023, becoming the second-ever national team to win three major titles.

Spain home football stadium

The Spanish national team does not have an official home stadium, playing their home games across the country.

They have played games in the capital city of Madrid (Bernabeu and Metropolitano), Valencia (Mestalla), Seville (Pizjuan) and Barcelona (Camp Nou).

Nicknamed ‘La Roja’, Spain’s kit has always predominantly been a red jersey with a yellow trim, dark blue shorts and black socks.

Their away kits have changed over the years but their current away jersey is all white with a red trim.

Spain current manager

Luis de la Fuente is the current manager of the Spanish national team, having taken over the role from Luis Enrique in January 2023.

An unknown name to many, De la Fuente had a successful playing career in Spain turning out for the likes of Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao before turning to management.

The 63-year-old has spent the majority of his managerial career coaching the Spain youth sides, managing the u19s, u21s and u23s – most recently guiding his country to a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

De la Fuente’s time as Spain boss has been a successful one so far, winning the UEFA Nations League in 2023, defeating Croatia 5-4 on penalties in the final.

Who is the Spain captain?

Alvaro Morata is the current Spain captain, having inherited the armband from former Barcelona star Jordi Alba.

The Atletico Madrid star has been the leading man in the Spanish attack under Luis de la Fuente and at 31 years old, he is now one of the most experienced heads in the Spain camp.
