ประโยชน์นิยม

ประโยชน์นิยม (อังกฤษ: utilitarianism) หมายถึง แนวคิดที่เชื่อว่าคุณค่าทางศีลธรรมเป็นการกระทำที่ขึ้นอยู่กับการทำประโยชน์เพื่อส่วนรวม กล่าวคือ เป็นการกระทำที่ก่อให้เกิดความสุขหรือความพอใจขึ้นในบุคคลโดยทั่วไป ซึ่งเป็นรูปแบบหนึ่งของผลลัพธ์นิยม หรือการยึดถือคุณค่าทางศีลธรรมขึ้นอยู่กับผลลัพธ์ที่เกิดขึ้นเป็นหลัก นักคิดทั้งหลายได้นิยามคำว่า "ประโยชน์" นี้หมายถึงความดีสูงสุด ได้แก่ ความสุขหรือความพอใจ (ตรงกันข้ามกับความทรมานหรือความเจ็บปวด) ทำให้อาจสามารถอธิบายได้ด้วยรูปแบบของชีวิตว่า ความสุขหรือความพอใจถือได้ว่าเป็นสิ่งที่มีความสำคัญสูงสุด

ประโยชน์นิยมถูกอธิบายด้วยถ้อยวลี "เป็นสิ่งดีสูงสุดสำหรับบุคคลจำนวนมากที่สุด" ดังนั้น ประโยชน์นิยมจึงเป็นที่รู้จักกันว่าเป็น "ทฤษฎีความสุขที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุด" ประโยชน์นิยมยังเป็นการแสดงถึงลักษณะการเชื่อมโยงต่อหลักจริยธรรม ซึ่งมีความผิดแผกไปจากจริยศาสตร์ ซึ่งไม่พิจารณาว่าผลลัพธ์ของการกระทำเป็นตัวกำหนดศีลธรรม เป็นต้น โดยผู้ที่มีมุมมองตรงกันข้ามกับประโยชน์นิยมได้วิพากษ์วิจารณ์มุมมองในแบบประโยชน์นิยมอยู่เรื่อย ๆ แต่ผู้ลัทธิประโยชน์นิยมก็มีวิพากษ์วิจารณ์ต่อแนวคิดอื่น ๆ คล้าย ๆ กัน และเหมือนกับทฤษฎีทางจริยธรรมทั้งหลาย การปฏิบัติตามแนวคิดประโยชน์นิยมเองก็ต้องพึ่งองค์ประกอบภายนอกเช่นกัน ได้แก่ สติปัญญา ประสบการณ์ ทักษะสังคม และทักษะชีวิต
