DIY Garden Herb Wall
If you’re looking for a way to add more greenery to your garden but lacking space, then here’s my DIY garden herb wall idea that I’ve been nurturing in my own garden for the past few months…
After years of waiting to get on the property ladder, we finally have out own garden! Technically I guess some may call it more of a courtyard as it measures at just 4m x 4m, but nevertheless it is an outdoor space in which we can make our own, grow some herbs and relax in the sunshine.
DIY Garden Herb Wall
Both myself and Tom are very green fingered, so we wanted to utilise the space we have to the maximum. When we designed the floor plan for the garden, it was important that we still left ample space for us to laze in the sunshine and host garden parties without feeling cramped.
The herb wall idea was something that flourished when I got hold of an old, slatted table top. Once it was turned on to it’s side it made the perfect stand to hang things from. It’s ideal for those lacking room as it requires minimal floor space, and adds life to a dull wall.
Make your own DIY garden herb wall…
YOU WILL NEED
- A structure to hang your plants from. This could either be an old table top (as shown above), a fence panel or a palette. Keep an eye out for anyone throwing away any of these things and be sure to always ask before taking.
- Hanging pots/ buckets Choose various sizes to make it more interesting. We used 15cm hanging buckets, and 60cm wide balcony planters for reference.
- S-hooks – You will need lots of these if you also decide to use buckets as they will hang from the slats.
- Solar powered string lights – These are optional but highly recommended. If you want to add some light at night, solar lights will make it an exciting feature.
How to DIY your own garden herb wall…
It really is quite simple! Once you have gathered all of the required materials to make your herb wall, decide where you want your herb wall to be. You may have a wall along the outside of the house that you want to add life to, or perhaps a dull fence panel that you want to make a feature of. The side of a shed/garage is another great option too…
You need to ensure that the herb wall is stable and not able to fall over. As the table-top for my herb wall was very heavy, it was sturdy enough when leant against the wall. If you’re using a palette or fence panel you may need to consider attaching it with a nails.
Once everything is in place, it’s time to enjoy titivating with the arrangement of your pots & planters. Consider what herbs you are going to grow, and group them in to sections if needs be. For my herb wall I decided to make the arrangement quite random and unsymmetrical – I always think this looks more pleasing to the eye!
Don’t forget to allow enough space above each pot for the herbs to grow!
Use S-hooks to hang the buckets. We used the smaller buckets for herbs we required less of, for example mint & rosemary. Then, we saved the larger planters for herbs we wanted more of; basil, coriander & parsley.
If you are attaching solar powered string lights, then you will need to hammer in small nails to wrap the lights around. Map out an arrangement that works for you, then position the nails accordingly. When all the nails are in position, carefully unwind the string lights and hook them round the nails as you go. Be warned, they are prone to tangle so take it slow!
Totally worth the extra effort though, look how lovely it is at night time…
