An inmate at the Burke County Detention Center died Thursday.

Burke County EMA was called to the jail around 9:23 p.m. June 30 after Brian O’Neal Fitzgerald, 51, complained about chest discomfort, according to an email from Capt. Jimmy Wylds with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.

“The inmate collapsed and was slow to respond to verbal commands. Burke EMA arrived on scene at 9:24 p.m. and began CPR. The inmate was transported to Burke Medical Center for continued care.”

He was pronounced dead at 10:06 p.m.

Fitzgerald, of Sardis, Ga., was being held on second degree arson charges.

Preliminary findings indicate he died of an apparent heart attack, the email said.
