Hi. Anyway you can provide me with more info on this picture? I would like to find out just how old it is. This makes interesting information when talking about bumblebees.
BTW, bumblebees do not make nests like this. A single bumblebee tunnels into the soil and will lay an egg in a chamber. She might create several chambers off of one tunnel, and she works alone.
Any help would be great. Thank you.

Hi Laurie, it’s hard for me to know. Most of my antique books are falling apart when I buy them, the books in bad condition are less expensive. So I often remove the pages to scan them and then they go in a drawer after that. If it’s from the book that I’m thinking of, it did not have a date on it, but it was most likely from around the 1860s-1880s judging by the style of the drawings. I have no idea where that page is currently, my filing system is not good! Perhaps these Bees were visiting a nest that belonged to some other insect?

Hi Karen,
Bees are so important in our world and to our environment – although some may disagree when they are stung but the awareness of their importance is something else.
I didn’t even know that there were that many kinds of styles for beehives. They all have a very different kind of personality to them like a ‘cottage style,’ or the ‘condo-style’ for the wooden ones. I had no idea they could be so different in those days. How interesting!
I have always used honey at home. My grandfather always mentioned that honey was pure and healthy compared to using sugar and our family grew up on honey.
We have a wonderful agricultural farming area in our region and there is a vendor out in the country that makes beeswax sheets that are used to preserve your produce. They are breathable and environmentally friendly. They really are amazing to use when you use them to store onions, asparagus – all kinds of veggies or cheese and items that you want to ‘preserve’ for a longer period of time.
And to think they use these methods instead of using plastic wrap or waxed paper. They are reusable as well which is great! The first company I dealt with is called Abeego – if you look it up, you will see. As I said, we have a local company who has been making these for our region and I love shopping local.
So, we must remember how important the bees are for us in so many ways.
Thanks so much for sharing these unique images with us. It’s nice to see how extraordinary they really were back then compared to today!
Enjoy your weekend and keep safe!
